Fishing looks like a side activity until you notice what's on the hook: boss-size catches up to level 79, the entire Coralum economy, and a pool full of subspecies you'd otherwise chase across the map. Here's what's genuinely worth casting for, which rod to build at each stage, and what all nine baits actually do.

## What's Worth Fishing For

Three targets justify the hobby on their own. [Whalaska](https://palworld-db.com/pal/whalaska) (Lv 50–69) hands over guaranteed [Coralum Ore](https://palworld-db.com/item/ManganeseOre) per catch — the [ore that gates the rod upgrades themselves](https://palworld-db.com/guides/where-to-find-coralum-ore) — and its Ignis form runs Lv 71–79. Boss-size catches are the second draw: tougher, larger versions of the same species, topping out at level 79 with [Whalaska Ignis](https://palworld-db.com/pal/whalaska-ignis), [Solmora Lux](https://palworld-db.com/pal/solmora-lux), and [Skutlass Ignis](https://palworld-db.com/pal/skutlass-ignis) — some of the highest-level catchable Pals in the game, no boss arena required. And the third: the fishing pool is stacked with element subspecies (the base [fishing database](https://palworld-db.com/fishing) lists all 78 entries with odds and level ranges).

## The Rod Ladder and Its Coralum Twins

Rods come in three tiers, and each tier has a twin: the base version, and a Coralum-upgraded variant that costs [Coralum Ore](https://palworld-db.com/item/ManganeseOre) or [Ingots](https://palworld-db.com/item/ManganeseIngot) on top. That's the loop — fish with the base rod, feed Whalaska's ore into the upgraded twin, catch better things:

| Rod | Tech Lv | Key Materials |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Beginner Fishing Rod (Chillet)](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingRod_01_1) | 15 | 10 Paldium, 3 Aquatic Pal Fluids |
| [Beginner Fishing Rod (Gumoss)](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingRod_01_2) | 15 line | + 3 Coralum Ore |
| [Intermediate Fishing Rod (Cattiva)](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingRod_02_1) | 29 | 30 Paldium, 5 HQ Pal Oil, 10 Cement |
| [Intermediate Fishing Rod (Croajiro)](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingRod_02_2) | 29 line | + 10 Coralum Ore |
| [Advanced Fishing Rod (Pengullet)](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingRod_03_1) | 45 | 70 Paldium, 15 HQ Pal Oil, 15 Pal Metal Ingot |
| [Advanced Fishing Rod (Depresso)](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingRod_03_2) | 45 line | + 5 Coralum Ingots |

## All 9 Baits and When to Use Them

Bait choice is a real decision — the nine types split into bite-rate boosters, minigame helpers, and loot multipliers. Simple Bait is the mandatory floor; everything else tunes the experience:

| Bait | What It Does |
| --- | --- |
| [Simple Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_1) | The baseline — required for fishing at all |
| [Beginner Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_1_A) | Capture gauge drains slower — the training wheels |
| [Sweet Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_1_B) | More bites than Simple |
| [High Quality Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_2) | The all-round bite-rate upgrade |
| [Lucky Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_2_A) | More items per catch |
| [Quick Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_2_B) | Even more bites, built on High Quality |
| [Deluxe Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_3) | Slightly bigger minigame bar |
| [Alluring Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_3_A) | Bigger bar and more items — the comfort pick |
| [Risky Bait](https://palworld-db.com/item/FishingBait_3_B) | Smaller bar, greatly increased items — the expert's gamble |

The practical pairings: **Risky Bait** on farming runs where you can land the minigame in your sleep, **Alluring** when a boss-size shadow shows up and you can't afford to lose it, and **Beginner** for anyone still fighting the gauge.

## Pond or Wild?

The base [Fishing Pond](https://palworld-db.com/fishing) trades exploration for exact odds — its Large pool tops out with [Azurobe Cryst](https://palworld-db.com/pal/azurobe-cryst) at an 11% pull and both Whalaskas in the mix, all at Lv 36–48. Wild spots go higher (that's where the Lv 50+ Whalaskas and the level-79 boss shadows live) and vary by region and water type — ocean, river, dungeon, and island spots each draw from their own pools. Almost everything bites around the clock; night-only catches are the rare exception, so fish whenever the mood strikes.

> **Tip.** The full loop for a fishing session that pays: an upgraded rod, Risky or Lucky Bait, and a route past wild ocean spots at your level band — with a [drop booster](https://palworld-db.com/guides/best-support-pals) in the party if your targets share an element. Everything caught boss-size condenses or breeds like any other Pal, per the [breeding guide](https://palworld-db.com/guides/how-breeding-works).
