Drawing a bow in Palworld locks you into a slow, half-speed aim, and there are plenty of moments where you want out of it — a Pal you meant to capture drops into red health range, or a Syndicate goon closes the distance while you're still pulling the string. There are **two ways to cancel a nocked arrow**, and this guide covers both inputs, every bow and crossbow they work on, and when cancelling is actually the better play.

## How to Cancel Arrows

Cancelling means backing out of a draw before the arrow is ever released, so you go straight back to a neutral stance instead of committing to a shot you no longer want. Every bow and crossbow in the game holds a **magazine of 1**, which is exactly why this matters: with a single arrow nocked at a time, a cancel is the difference between reacting instantly and eating the full draw-plus-reload cycle. Both methods below work identically on every bow-class weapon.

| Method | Input | What happens |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Cancel button | The prompt shown under your crosshair (**X** on Xbox) | Drops the draw instantly, arrow is never released, you keep aiming freedom back |
| Weapon swap | Mouse scroll wheel on PC, **Y** on Xbox | Puts the bow away with the arrow still nocked and brings up the next weapon in your slots |

### Press the Cancel Button While Aiming

The moment you start pulling the bowstring, a cancel prompt appears just below the crosshair — the game shows you the correct button for whatever you're playing on, so you don't need to memorise a binding per platform. On Xbox that prompt is **X**. Tap it and the draw drops without the arrow leaving the bow, which is the cleanest option when you want to stay on the bow and simply re-aim at something else. This is the one to use mid-fight, because you're back on the same weapon with no swap animation to sit through.

### Switch to Another Weapon

The second method is a plain weapon swap: scroll the mouse wheel on PC or press **Y** on Xbox and the pre-loaded arrow goes away with the bow. Use this when cancelling was never really the goal — you wanted a different tool entirely, like a melee weapon for something that closed to point-blank range, or a [Pal Sphere](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalSphere) for a Pal you've finally softened up. Keeping a bow and a backup in adjacent slots makes this a single flick, and [unlocking more weapon slots](https://palworld-db.com/guides/how-to-get-more-weapon-and-food-slots) gives you more to flick between.

> **Tip.** If you're trying to catch a Pal rather than kill it, learn the cancel button before you learn the damage numbers. The [Advanced Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SFBow) hits for 5,800 base Attack and the [Mechanical Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyBow) for 20,000 — enough to delete a low-level target you wanted alive. Cancelling a drawn shot the instant a Pal's health bar dips is the cheapest way to avoid wasting a capture.

## Every Bow and Crossbow This Works On

The cancel applies to the whole bow class, from the level 3 starter to the endgame Feybreak bow. The gap between them is enormous — the [Mechanical Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyBow) carries roughly **300× the base Attack** of the [Old Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/WeakerBow) you start with — but the draw-and-cancel handling never changes, so the habit you build at Tech level 3 still pays off at 67. Attack figures below are the **base (un-upgraded) version** of each weapon; refined and legendary copies of the same bow hit harder, and these numbers only compare against each other, not against guns.

| Weapon | Base Attack | Durability | Ammo it uses | Unlock |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Old Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/WeakerBow) | 65 | 150 | [Arrow](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow) | Tech Lv 3 |
| [Three Shot Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/Bow_Triple) | 40 | 250 | [Arrow](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow) | Tech Lv 10 |
| [Crossbow](https://palworld-db.com/item/BowGun) | 280 | 300 | [Arrow](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow) | Tech Lv 13 |
| [Compound Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/CompoundBow) | 1,100 | 400 | [Reinforced Arrow](https://palworld-db.com/item/ReinforcedArrow) | Tech Lv 42 |
| [Advanced Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SFBow) | 5,800 | 500 | [Advanced Arrow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SFArrow) | Tech Lv 57 |
| [Mechanical Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyBow) | 20,000 | 2,000 | [Mechanical Bow Ammo](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyBowArrow) | Tech Lv 67 |

The [Three Shot Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/Bow_Triple) is the odd one out: its 40 listed Attack is the lowest on the board because it throws a spread instead of a single heavy arrow, so cancelling it saves you three arrows rather than one. The two elemental crossbows — the [Fire Arrow Crossbow](https://palworld-db.com/item/BowGun_Fire) and the [Poison Arrow Crossbow](https://palworld-db.com/item/BowGun_Poison) — share the standard [Crossbow](https://palworld-db.com/item/BowGun) chassis at 280 base Attack and 300 durability, but they demand [Fire Arrows](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow_Fire) and [Poison Arrows](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow_Poison) respectively, which cost a [Flame Organ](https://palworld-db.com/item/FireOrgan) or a [Venom Gland](https://palworld-db.com/item/Venom) per batch. Those are the shots you least want to throw away.

## When Cancelling Is the Right Call

Bows are slow by design, and the draw is the part of the animation you're most likely to regret. Three situations come up constantly, and in all three the cancel button beats releasing the shot and hoping.

### You're Capturing, Not Killing

Once a target is low, every extra arrow risks killing the Pal you came for. Cancel the draw the moment its health drops into throwing range, then swap to a sphere. This matters most with the high-tier bows, where a single hit can overshoot the window entirely — see the [combat mechanics breakdown](https://palworld-db.com/guides/combat-mechanics) for how weak points and damage multipliers push you past that line faster than you'd think.

### The Target Moved or Something Closed In

A drawn bow slows your movement, so committing to a shot against a flying or charging target is often worse than resetting. Cancel, reposition, and re-draw when you have the angle. If the thing that closed in is now in your face, use the weapon swap instead — a melee weapon or a shotgun answers point-blank pressure far better than a bow with a one-arrow magazine ever will.

### You're Burning Expensive Ammo

Basic [Arrows](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow) cost 2× [Wood](https://palworld-db.com/item/Wood) and 2× [Stone](https://palworld-db.com/item/Stone) per batch of 10, so nobody agonises over those. The late-game ammo is a different story: [Reinforced Arrows](https://palworld-db.com/item/ReinforcedArrow) eat 2× [Refined Ingot](https://palworld-db.com/item/IronIngot) and 2× [Carbon Fiber](https://palworld-db.com/item/CarbonFiber) per 10, [Advanced Arrows](https://palworld-db.com/item/SFArrow) run on Plasteel and Carbon Fiber, and [Mechanical Bow Ammo](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyBowArrow) costs 2× [Soralite Ingot](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyislandIngot) for 10. When a shot is worth that much, taking the cancel over a bad release is straightforwardly the cheaper option. Full recipes for all of them are in the [list of all arrows and how to craft them](https://palworld-db.com/guides/all-arrows-how-to-craft).

## Keep the Cheap Arrows Stocked Anyway

Cancelling saves ammo, but the real fix for early-game arrow anxiety is volume. Merchants sell [Arrow](https://palworld-db.com/item/Arrow) for **10 Gold each** at the Caravan, Village and Dungeon shops, which makes a hundred rounds a 1,000 Gold purchase — while the same hundred is 20 Wood and 20 Stone at a Primitive Workbench. Never buy them. A [Vixy](https://palworld-db.com/pal/vixy) parked on a Ranch also digs up arrows on her own, and the haul per roll climbs from a single arrow at the bottom rank to 12-13 at the top, so a levelled Vixy quietly keeps your quiver full while you do something else.

> **Tip.** [Robinquill](https://palworld-db.com/pal/robinquill) and [Robinquill Terra](https://palworld-db.com/pal/robinquill-terra) both drop 2-4 Arrows at a **100% rate**, so any Grassland archery run pays for its own ammo. If you're farming them anyway, you are effectively shooting for free.

## Summary

Two inputs, one habit: press the cancel button shown under the crosshair (**X** on Xbox) to drop a drawn arrow and stay on the bow, or swap weapons with the scroll wheel on PC or **Y** on Xbox to put the nocked arrow away entirely. It works on every bow and crossbow, from the 65-Attack [Old Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/WeakerBow) to the 20,000-Attack [Mechanical Bow](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyBow), and it matters most when you're trying to capture a Pal alive or firing ammo that costs Soralite.
