A mutated egg is the Breeding Farm's jackpot roll — instead of the Pal your pairing was supposed to produce, you get a different one standing at least as high on the breeding ladder, wearing a passive skill that no Pal in the Paldex is born with. This guide covers all five mutated egg sizes, the cake that actually makes them happen, what your choice of parents does to the reroll pool, and every mutation-exclusive passive with its exact effect values.

## What a Mutated Egg Actually Is

Normal breeding is deterministic. Two parents feed their hidden breeding ranks into an average, the game rounds to the nearest species, and that egg was decided the moment it dropped — which is exactly why the [Palworld breeding calculator](https://palworld-db.com/breeding) can tell you the child before you ever place the cake. A mutation is the one thing that breaks that rule: the egg comes out as a **Mutated Egg** instead, and what hatches is rerolled to a different species, with a mutation-only passive already attached.

There is a persistent myth that every mutated egg is the Huge kind. It isn't. Mutated eggs mirror the ordinary egg ladder step for step — same five rarity grades, same 10 / 25 / 50 carry weight as a Common, Damp or Dragon egg — and the Huge one is simply the top rung.

| Mutated Egg | Rarity | Weight | Where it sits |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Mutated Egg](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalEgg_MutationPal_01) | Common | 10 | The base rung, same weight as a Common Egg |
| [Mutated Egg](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalEgg_MutationPal_02) | Uncommon | 10 | Identical size, one rarity step up |
| [Large Mutated Egg](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalEgg_MutationPal_03) | Rare | 25 | Weight jumps to 25 — plan your inventory |
| [Large Mutated Egg](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalEgg_MutationPal_04) | Epic | 25 | The second Large grade |
| [Huge Mutated Egg](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalEgg_MutationPal) | Legendary | 50 | Top of the ladder, and 50 weight on its own |

The practical takeaway is the weight column. A Huge Mutated Egg is 50 carry weight in a single slot and it does not stack, so if you are mass-breeding for mutations you want to be running back to an [Egg Incubator](https://palworld-db.com/structures) between batches rather than hoarding eggs in your bag. Every grade hatches in the same incubators as a normal egg — no special structure required.

## What You Need Before You Can Chase Mutations

Mutation hunting has a hard gate on it, and it is not the Breeding Farm — that unlocks early. The gate is **Technology Lv 60**, because that is where Extravagant Vegetable Cake sits, and without that cake you are relying on a rate so low it is not a plan. Everything else on this checklist you will already own by the time you get there.

| What | Tech Lv | Build cost | Why you need it |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| | 19 | [×10](https://palworld-db.com/item/Processed_Wood) [×20](https://palworld-db.com/item/Stone) [×50](https://palworld-db.com/item/Fiber) | Where the pair is placed and the cake goes in the chest |
| | 10 | [×10](https://palworld-db.com/item/Pal_crystal_S) [×5](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cloth) [×30](https://palworld-db.com/item/Stone) [×2](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalCrystal_Ex) | Hatches every mutated egg grade |
| | 36 | [×50](https://palworld-db.com/item/IronIngot) [×15](https://palworld-db.com/item/MachineParts2) [×5](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalCrystal_Ex) [×2](https://palworld-db.com/item/AncientParts2) | Holds temperature for you instead of you juggling campfires |
| | 48 | [×50](https://palworld-db.com/item/StealIngot) [×20](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cloth2) [×20](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalCrystal_Ex) [×5](https://palworld-db.com/item/AncientParts2) | Multiple eggs at once — the real mutation-farming upgrade |
| [Extravagant Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake04) | 60 | 4 Technology Points | The only reliable way to push mutation odds up |

If you are only building one thing off this list, make it the [Large Incubator](https://palworld-db.com/structures) at Tech 48. Mutation hunting is a volume game — you are cycling dozens of eggs to see one Mutated Egg — and a single incubator turns that into a bottleneck no amount of cake can fix. Two Large Incubators next to the farm is the setup that actually makes the grind bearable.

## How to Get Mutated Eggs

There is exactly one lever, and it is a cake. Mutations can technically occur on any breeding session, but the untouched rate is low enough that people play for hundreds of hours without seeing one. Loading an [Extravagant Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake04) into the Breeding Farm's chest instead of a plain [Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake) raises the mutation chance for that session — Pocketpair has never published the actual percentage, so treat every number you see quoted for it as a guess, but the direction is not in doubt.

The routine itself is unglamorous:
- Place two Pals of opposite genders in the [Breeding Farm](https://palworld-db.com/structures) — mutation does not care which species, only the intended child matters
- Keep the chest stocked with Extravagant Vegetable Cake so no session ever runs on a cheaper cake by accident
- Hatch everything, including the ordinary eggs, since a mutated egg is visually distinct the moment it drops
- Repeat. This is a numbers grind, not a trick

### Extravagant Vegetable Cake Recipe

This is the most expensive non-endgame cake in the game, and the ingredient list is where a lot of mutation hunts quietly die. Note the counts carefully — Potato is the ×10 line and Onion is only ×6, which is easy to get backwards when both cost the same 100 Gold at a vendor. One cake, one breeding session.

| Material | Qty | Where it comes from |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Flour](https://palworld-db.com/item/Flour) | 12 | Milled from [Wheat](https://palworld-db.com/item/Wheat) at 3 Wheat per Flour — 36 Wheat per cake |
| [Potato](https://palworld-db.com/item/Potato) | 10 | Plantation, 5.8 min per harvest of 10 — or 100 Gold each at a Caravan Shop |
| [Carrot](https://palworld-db.com/item/Carrot) | 8 | Plantation, 6.2 min per harvest of 10 — or 100 Gold each |
| [Cotton Candy](https://palworld-db.com/item/Sweet) | 8 | Ranch drop from [Woolipop](https://palworld-db.com/pal/woolipop) — no shop sells it |
| [Onion](https://palworld-db.com/item/Onion) | 6 | Plantation, 6.5 min per harvest of 10 — or 100 Gold each |

Traced back to raw materials that is **68 units per cake**: 36 Wheat, 10 Potato, 8 Carrot, 8 Cotton Candy and 6 Onion. Buying the vegetables outright runs **4,920 Gold a cake** at Caravan Shop prices (Wheat is 70 Gold, the three vegetables 100 Gold each) — and that still doesn't cover the Cotton Candy, which has no vendor at all. A [Woolipop](https://palworld-db.com/pal/woolipop) on the [Ranch](https://palworld-db.com/ranch) is genuinely mandatory here, not optional; without one your mutation hunt stops after the cakes you can afford.

Growing instead of buying is four Wheat harvests plus one each of Potato, Carrot and Onion per cake, which a plantation cluster with decent [Planting Pals](https://palworld-db.com/best-pals/planting) turns over in the background while you breed. That is the setup you want before you start, because the cake is consumed per session and a real mutation hunt burns dozens of them.

### Why This Cake and Not the Others

All five cakes go in the same chest and each one bends the egg in a different direction, so it is worth knowing what you are giving up. Special Cake is the more famous endgame cake, but it does nothing for mutations — it stacks inherited passives. If mutations are the goal, Extravagant Vegetable Cake is the only correct answer, and the fact that it also helps talents grow is a free bonus.

| Cake | Tech Lv | What it does to the egg | Use it for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake) | — | Nothing special — just enables breeding | Cheap bulk sessions |
| [Mushroom Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake02) | 30 | Talents grow slightly more easily | Raising a keeper's stat ceiling |
| [Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake03) | 47 | Lays two eggs at once | Mass-hatching volume |
| [Extravagant Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake04) | 60 | Raises mutation odds, plus easier talent growth | Mutation hunting — the one you want |
| [Special Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake05) | 74 | Better odds of inheriting multiple parent passives | Building a 4-passive endgame Pal |

One trap worth naming: [Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake03) and [Extravagant Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake04) have nearly the same name and sit adjacent in the crafting menu, and the plain one doubles eggs while doing nothing for mutations. Doubling your eggs sounds like it should double your mutation chances, but you are doubling rolls on a session that has no mutation bonus at all. The full breakdown of every recipe and effect lives in the [Palworld cake guide](https://palworld-db.com/guides/all-cakes-in-palworld).

### Pick Rare Parents, Not Cheap Ones

This is the part almost nobody optimises, and it is the difference between a mutation being exciting and being a shrug. When a mutation fires, the reroll doesn't pull from all 261 breedable species evenly — it lands at or above the species your pairing was already going to make. Your intended child is the **floor**, which means breeding two starter Pals guarantees a mutation that can still hand you something you already own, while breeding two rare Pals cuts the pool down to the good half of the roster.

Run four pairings through the [breeding calculator](https://palworld-db.com/breeding) and the effect is obvious:

| Pairing | Intended child | Species the mutation can roll |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Lamball](https://palworld-db.com/pal/lamball) + [Chikipi](https://palworld-db.com/pal/chikipi) | [Vixy](https://palworld-db.com/pal/vixy) | 259 of 261 — effectively the entire roster |
| [Mozzarina](https://palworld-db.com/pal/mozzarina) + [Woolipop](https://palworld-db.com/pal/woolipop) | [Kelpsea](https://palworld-db.com/pal/kelpsea) | 233 of 261 |
| [Munchill](https://palworld-db.com/pal/munchill) + [Arsox](https://palworld-db.com/pal/arsox) | [Kingpaca](https://palworld-db.com/pal/kingpaca) | 174 of 261 |
| [Yakumo](https://palworld-db.com/pal/yakumo) + [Incineram Noct](https://palworld-db.com/pal/incineram-noct) | [Hoodle](https://palworld-db.com/pal/hoodle) | 135 of 261 — the rarer half only |

Same cake, same grind, wildly different payoff. The Lamball pairing is the cheapest possible mutation farm and it is also the worst one, because a mutation there is barely better than a normal hatch. Pair two Pals that already sit high on the ladder and every mutated egg you crack is drawn from the top end. Pocketpair hasn't documented how the reroll weights the pool internally, so treat the counts as the ceiling of what's reachable rather than a flat chance per species.

For reference, these are the ten rarest species on the breeding ladder — the outcomes only a high-tier pairing can put in reach:

Aegidron, Eidrolon Ignis, Jormuntide Ignis, Tetroise Primo, Knocklem Ignis, Ophydia, Dualith Noct, Knocklem, Celesdir Noct, Solenne

## All 5 Mutation-Exclusive Passive Skills

Every mutated egg hatches with one of five passives that sit at the game's top passive rank, and this is the real reason to chase mutations at all. Not one Pal in the Paldex is born with any of them, and they cannot be rolled on a wild catch — the only two ways into your box are a mutation or an implant. Two of the five are outright build-defining.

| Passive | Exact effect | Why it's worth chasing |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Immortality](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_Immortal) | Life Steal +5%, Auto HP regen +100%, Attack +15% | The best of the five — an attack passive that also makes the Pal self-sustaining in long fights |
| [Idiosyncratic](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_Mutant) | Auto HP regen +50% for Pal and player, Defense +25%, immune to Poison and Burn | The only one that heals you too, and it hard-counters two of the nastiest status effects |
| [Babysitter](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_Babysitter) | At a base, +30% egg production and +30% incubation speed on a Breeding Farm | Pure economy — a mutation that makes finding the next mutation faster |
| [Heavily Armored](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_ExplosionResist) | Immune to Explosion damage | Narrow but absolute; nothing else in the game zeroes an entire damage type |
| [Skymarcher](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_RideJumpCount_Increase2) | Mounted Jump Count +2 | Traversal only, but a double-jumping mount changes how you cross the map |

If you are picking a target, **Immortality** is the one. A flat +15% Attack already competes with the best attack passives in the game, and stapling +100% health regeneration and life steal onto the same slot means it does the job of two passives at once — on a [raid boss](https://palworld-db.com/raid-bosses) fight where sustain decides the run, nothing else in this tier comes close. **Idiosyncratic** is the defensive pick for the same reason, since the poison and burn immunity applies where those effects hurt most. **Babysitter** looks weak next to those two right up until you realise it compounds: a Babysitter Pal parked on the farm speeds up the very grind that produced it.

The other passives you can never roll naturally — Legend, the elemental Lord and Emperor traits, the raid exclusives — are covered in the [guide to every exclusive passive skill](https://palworld-db.com/guides/exclusive-passive-skills), and the [full passive skill database](https://palworld-db.com/passives) has the numbers for all of them.

## The Shortcut: Disposable Implants

You do not strictly have to breed for these. All five mutation passives also exist as Disposable Implants, and implants are the honest answer for anyone who wants the passive on a specific Pal rather than on whatever the reroll happens to hand them. The catch is that there is exactly one source: recycling **Glistening Ancient Relics**, the top relic grade, at the [Ancient Relic Recycler](https://palworld-db.com/guides/ancient-relic-recycler). No lower relic grade rolls this pool at all.

| Implant | Grants | Chance per Glistening relic |
| --- | --- | --- |
| [Disposable Implant: Immortality](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_Immortal) | Immortality | 3.888% |
| [Disposable Implant: Idiosyncratic](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_Mutant) | Idiosyncratic | 3.888% |
| [Disposable Implant: Babysitter](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_Babysitter) | Babysitter | 3.888% |
| [Disposable Implant: Heavily Armored](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_MutationPal_ExplosionResist) | Heavily Armored | 3.888% |
| [Disposable Implant: Skymarcher](https://palworld-db.com/item/PalPassiveSkillChange_Consumable_RideJumpCount_Increase2) | Skymarcher | 3.888% |

Five equal slots at 3.888% each means roughly **one Glistening relic in five pays out some mutation implant**, though only one in twenty-six gives you the specific one you wanted. Every implant shares the same syringe icon in your inventory, so read the name rather than the art when you're sorting a stack. Glistening relics themselves come from World Tree treasure chests, World Tree fishing spots, and the Forbidden Area expedition at 2-4 per 120-minute run — which makes [expeditions](https://palworld-db.com/expeditions) the passive way to build a stockpile while you breed.

Which route is better depends entirely on what you want. Chasing a rare species *and* a top passive in one hatch is breeding's job. Putting Immortality on a Pal you have already perfected is the implant's job, and no amount of cake will do it for you.

> **Tip.** Run both routes at once. Park a [Woolipop](https://palworld-db.com/pal/woolipop) on the ranch and a plantation on Wheat, keep the Breeding Farm chest full of [Extravagant Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake04), and set your longest [expedition](https://palworld-db.com/expeditions) slots to the World Tree's Forbidden Area every time you log off. The cakes fish for mutated eggs while you play; the expeditions stack [Glistening Ancient Relics](https://palworld-db.com/item/WorldTreeRelic_05) for implants while you don't.

## Summary

Mutated eggs come in all five sizes, not just Huge, and the only reliable way to see one is loading [Extravagant Vegetable Cake](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cake04) into the Breeding Farm from Technology Lv 60 onward — 68 raw materials or 4,920 Gold a session, plus Cotton Candy that only a ranch can supply. Breed rare parents rather than cheap ones, because the intended child sets the floor on what the mutation can roll into. And if you want a specific one of the five mutation passives on a specific Pal, skip the eggs entirely and recycle Glistening Ancient Relics at 3.888% per implant.
