A base fire in Palworld spreads through anything wooden and eats the materials you spent hours hauling, and a burning player loses HP while their hunger drains twice as fast. Here's how to kill a fire the moment it starts, what to do when the flames are on you instead of your walls, and how to rebuild so it never happens again.

## How to Put Out Fires in Your Base

Fires in a base are handled by Pals with the **Watering** work suitability — 46 of the game's Pals have it, and every one of them will break off whatever job they're on to douse a burning structure. The catch is coverage: a single Watering Pal on a large base can be halfway across the camp when the fire starts, so the fastest fix is to grab the Pal and throw it straight at the flames, or summon a Water Pal from your party if none are stationed. Rank matters here too — a Watering 8 Pal moves through the extinguish job far quicker than a Watering 1 starter, which is why one good late-game worker beats three early ones.

### Best Watering Pals for Fire Control

The table below ranks the Watering roster by suitability level, with the practical caveat attached: the top three are level-70-plus catches, so most players are fire-fighting with a mid-tier Pal for a long stretch of the game. [Shaolong](https://palworld-db.com/pal/shaolong) is the single best fire responder in the game at Watering 8, but [Jormuntide](https://palworld-db.com/pal/jormuntide) is the one most bases actually run — Watering 7 on a fixed level 55 Alpha you can walk up to on the [interactive map](https://palworld-db.com/map?pal=Umihebi) instead of hunting spawn tables. If you're still early, [Turtacle](https://palworld-db.com/pal/turtacle) is the pick nobody talks about: only Watering 2, but 2,960 spawn spots means you'll trip over one before you even have a base worth burning.

| Pal | Watering | Size | Wild Level | Spawn Spots | Why it works |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Shaolong](https://palworld-db.com/pal/shaolong) | 8 | XL | 76–78 | 126 | Highest Watering rank in the game — nothing clears a burning base faster |
| [Jormuntide](https://palworld-db.com/pal/jormuntide) | 7 | XL | 55–80 | [Alpha boss](https://palworld-db.com/map?pal=Umihebi) | The realistic best-in-slot — a fixed level 55 Alpha you can go take at your own pace |
| [Neptilius](https://palworld-db.com/pal/neptilius) | 7 | XL | 60 | [Alpha boss](https://palworld-db.com/map?pal=PoseidonOrca) | Ties Jormuntide's rank; one fixed level 60 Alpha, so it's a single fight not a hunt |
| [Faleris Aqua](https://palworld-db.com/pal/faleris-aqua) | 6 | L | 56–80 | 394 | Watering 6 with 394 spawn spots — the most findable high-rank waterer |
| [Suzaku Aqua](https://palworld-db.com/pal/suzaku-aqua) | 6 | XL | 42–80 | 100 | Same rank as Faleris Aqua and available a full level band earlier |
| [Ghangler](https://palworld-db.com/pal/ghangler) | 5 | M | 30–58 | 398 | The mid-game workhorse — Watering 5 at levels most players are actually at |
| [Whalaska](https://palworld-db.com/pal/whalaska) | 5 | XL | 42–80 | 194 | Watering 5 plus Ice typing, so it doubles up on the cooler in the same base |
| [Azurobe](https://palworld-db.com/pal/azurobe) | 4 | L | 35–80 | 422 | Solid Watering 4 and one of the easier dragons to find in the wild |
| [Surfent](https://palworld-db.com/pal/surfent) | 3 | M | 12–35 | 598 | The first genuinely useful waterer — catchable in the low teens |
| [Turtacle](https://palworld-db.com/pal/turtacle) | 2 | M | 5–39 | 2,960 | More spawn spots than any other waterer; the early-base default |
| [Pengullet](https://palworld-db.com/pal/pengullet) | 1 | XS | 2–45 | 2,260 | Weakest rank, but XS size makes it the easiest Pal to pick up and throw at flames |
| [Kelpsea](https://palworld-db.com/pal/kelpsea) | 1 | XS | 9–19 | 2,742 | Another XS thrower with the largest spawn pool of the starter waterers |

Note the **Size** column — it is doing more work than it looks. XS Pals like [Pengullet](https://palworld-db.com/pal/pengullet) and [Kelpsea](https://palworld-db.com/pal/kelpsea) are the ones you can scoop up and hurl onto a specific burning wall, which is the difference between losing one structure and losing a row of them. The XL entries at the top of the table are better workers but clumsier emergency tools, so the ideal base keeps a high-rank waterer stationed and a cheap XS one in the party. Full rankings and spawn breakdowns live in the [Best Pals for Watering](https://palworld-db.com/guides/best-pals-for-watering) guide, and the complete roster is in the [List of All 47 Water Type Pals](https://palworld-db.com/guides/all-water-type-pals).

One roster quirk worth knowing: Watering and Water typing are almost the same list, but not quite. 47 Pals carry the Water element and 46 of them can water — the exception is [Panthalus](https://palworld-db.com/pal/panthalus), which has no work suitabilities at all and will never touch a fire no matter how wet it looks. Dual types still count, so a Dragon/Water Pal like [Shaolong](https://palworld-db.com/pal/shaolong) or an Ice/Water one like [Whalaska](https://palworld-db.com/pal/whalaska) works exactly as well as a pure Water Pal.

### Disassemble the Burning Structure

If there is no waterer anywhere near the fire, don't stand and watch it spread — open the disassembly menu and tear the burning piece down yourself. Dismantling returns the build materials to you, so you walk away with your Wood and Stone back instead of a pile of ash, and the fire loses the thing it was spreading through. This is especially worth doing on wall runs, where a single burning [Wooden Wall](https://palworld-db.com/structures) will otherwise hand the flames a path to the next twelve. If you're doing this often, the [Pal Disassembly Conveyor](https://palworld-db.com/guides/how-to-get-pal-disassembly-conveyor) page covers the automated version of the same idea.

## What to Do When Your Character Is On Fire

Being on fire is not just a damage-over-time tick. It also pushes your temperature gauge into the hot zone, which drains hunger noticeably faster, so a long burn costs you HP, food, and whatever you were carrying to eat. There are three ways out, and they are not equal — water kills the fire outright, gear kills it and keeps it off, and coolers only fix the temperature side.

### Get Into Water

The instant fix is submerging yourself. Any lake, river, or coastline works, and the flames go out the moment you're in — no cooldown, no cost, no item. It's the reason a lot of experienced players site bases near water in the first place; the [best base locations](https://palworld-db.com/guides/best-base-locations) rundown flags which of the good camps have a shoreline you can sprint to. Away from a base, sprint downhill — water in Palworld collects at the bottom of terrain, so downhill is almost always the shortest route to it.

### Swap Into Heat-Resistant Armor

Every armor tier in the game has a heat-resistant variant, and swapping into one puts the fire out while you're standing there. It also stops the temperature gauge from climbing again, which the water dunk does not. The unlock levels below tell you which one you can actually make right now — the numbers compare only within the armor class, so a Heat Resistant Pelt Armor's 45 defense being lower than Refined Metal's 180 is a tier gap, not a heat-resistance gap. All of these are common-rarity base versions; higher-rarity rolls from schematics push the same piece much higher.

| Armor | Unlock Lv. | Base Defense | Base HP | Durability |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| [Tropical Outfit](https://palworld-db.com/item/ClothArmorHeat) | 9 | 25 | 70 | 300 |
| [Heat Resistant Pelt Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/FurArmorHeat) | 16 | 45 | 140 | 600 |
| [Heat Resistant Metal Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/CopperArmorHeat) | 25 | 105 | 250 | 1,400 |
| [Heat Resistant Refined Metal Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/IronArmorHeat) | 40 | 180 | 500 | 3,000 |
| [Heat Resistant Pal Metal Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/StealArmorHeat) | 48 | 250 | 750 | 10,000 |
| [Heat Resistant Plasteel Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/PlasticArmorHeat) | 53 | 400 | 1,300 | 18,000 |
| [Heat Resistant Hexolite Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/SFArmorHeat) | 63 | 600 | 1,750 | 18,000 |
| [Heat-Resistant Ancient Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/AncientArmorHeat) | 75 | 840 | 2,400 | 25,000 |

The [Tropical Outfit](https://palworld-db.com/item/ClothArmorHeat) at level 9 is the earliest heat protection in the game and worth crafting purely as a swap-in piece, even if you fight in something sturdier. From level 40 the [Heat Resistant Refined Metal Armor](https://palworld-db.com/item/IronArmorHeat) is the first version that doesn't feel like a downgrade in a fight, and the durability jump at Pal Metal — 10,000 against Refined Metal's 3,000 — is where the heat set stops needing constant repair. If you'd rather not give up a full armor slot, the [Heat Resistant Undershirt](https://palworld-db.com/item/Accessory_HeatResist_1) accessory carries the same Temperature Resist Heat effect for 20 Wool, 15 [Flame Organ](https://palworld-db.com/item/FireOrgan), 25 [Leather](https://palworld-db.com/item/Leather), and 35 [Fiber](https://palworld-db.com/item/Fiber). Upgrade paths for the rest of your kit are in the [Best Armor at Every Tech Level](https://palworld-db.com/guides/best-armor-by-tech-level) guide.

### Stand Next to a Cooler

Cooling facilities don't extinguish anything — they pull your temperature back down, which is what actually stops the hunger drain that makes a burn expensive. They are the passive layer: put one in the base and the heat side of the problem stops mattering. All three need an Ice Pal assigned to run them properly, so pair whatever you build with a worker from the [Best Pals for Cooling](https://palworld-db.com/guides/best-pals-for-cooling) list.

| Facility | Unlock Lv. | Materials | What it does |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| | 18 | 20 Ingot, 20 Stone, 5 [Ice Organ](https://palworld-db.com/item/IceOrgan) | Modest cooling — enough to take the edge off a hot base |
| | 33 | 5 [Ice Organ](https://palworld-db.com/item/IceOrgan), 10 Wood, 5 [Cloth](https://palworld-db.com/item/Cloth) | Speeds up how fast the base cools; a second one adds nothing |
| | 42 | 30 Refined Ingot, 10 Circuit Board, 10 [Cryogenic Coolant](https://palworld-db.com/item/Bio_Coolant) | Drops the temperature far harder, but needs a power supply |

Build the [Ingot](https://palworld-db.com/item/CopperIngot)-cheap Cooler at 18 and leave it — it's a level-18 structure doing a level-18 job, and it holds up until you have electricity running. Once the base has power, the Electric Cooler is a straight replacement rather than an addition. The Snowman is the odd one: it doesn't cool by itself, it makes the cooling you already have work faster, and the game explicitly ignores duplicates, so exactly one is the correct number.

## How to Fireproof Your Base

The permanent fix is material choice. Wood and cloth burn; stone and metal don't. Palworld ships seven full structure sets, and the split is clean once you look at what each one is made of — two of them are wood-based and will carry a fire across your whole camp, and the rest are built from stone, ingots, or synthetic material that flames don't take to. The costs below are per piece, using the plain wall as the reference.

| Structure Set | Unlock Lv. | Cost per Wall | Burns? |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| | 2 | 2 Wood | **Yes** — the set every new base is made of, and the reason base fires spread |
| | 19 | 3 [Stone](https://palworld-db.com/item/Stone) | No — the first fireproof set and the cheapest one to spam |
| | 30 | 1 Ingot + 2 [Stone](https://palworld-db.com/item/Stone) | No — stronger than stone for a single ingot more |
| | 45 | 1 [Stone](https://palworld-db.com/item/Stone) + 2 [Paldium Fragment](https://palworld-db.com/item/Pal_crystal_S) | No — stone-cored despite the look |
| | 49 | 4 [Hardwood](https://palworld-db.com/item/Wood_Fine) | **Yes** — the pretty trap; it's hardwood, so it burns like the level 2 set |
| | 62 | 1 [Polymer](https://palworld-db.com/item/Polymer) | No — one polymer per piece, the cheapest late set to build |
| | 67 | 2 [Soralite Ingot](https://palworld-db.com/item/SkyislandIngot) | No — the endgame set, ingot-built throughout |

Level 19 is the real fireproofing milestone. The Stone Structure Set costs 3 Stone per wall — the most abundant material in the game — and it is the single cheapest thing you can do to make a base stop burning. The trap on this list is the Japanese-Style set at 49: it unlocks deep into the game, it looks like an upgrade, and it is 4 Hardwood per piece, so a beautiful Japanese-style base is just as flammable as the starter shack. If you want the aesthetic without the risk, the Glass set at 45 is stone-cored and reads similarly clean. The full cost breakdown for all seven sets is in the [Palworld Base Building Guide](https://palworld-db.com/guides/base-building-guide).

Furniture is the other half of the problem, because most of it is wood and cloth by default:
- Beds are the worst offender — the [Shoddy Bed](https://palworld-db.com/guides/list-of-all-base-structures) is 20 Wood, 5 Fiber, 1 Wool, and the Fine Bed at 28 adds 10 Cloth on top of 50 Wood
- Pal beds follow the same pattern until the at level 56, which is 10 Pal Metal Ingot, 6 Cryogenic Coolant, and 3 Computer — no wood, no cloth
- The itself uses 10 Wood and 5 Cloth, so don't park it against your only fireproof wall
- Wooden defensive walls at level 8 burn; the Stone Defensive Wall at 19 and Metal Defensive Wall at 30 don't

## What Actually Starts the Fires

Two things set a base alight, and both are avoidable. The first is a failed raid — when Syndicate attackers or raiding Pals win the fight, they torch what's left standing, which is why a base that can't defend itself loses structures on top of losing the raid. Base defenses and the level bands raids scale into are covered on the [Syndicate Thugs](https://palworld-db.com/guides/syndicate-thugs) page. The second is you: fighting a Fire-type Pal inside your own camp means its attacks land on your buildings, and there are 43 Fire Pals in the game to run into, from level-5 [Foxparks](https://palworld-db.com/pal/foxparks) up to [Blazamut](https://palworld-db.com/pal/blazamut).

The fix for the second one is trivial — drag the fight outside your base boundary before you engage, or don't engage at all until the walls are stone. The full roster with spawn locations is in the [List of All 43 Fire Type Pals](https://palworld-db.com/guides/all-fire-type-pals), and the Burn status those attacks apply to you personally is broken down in [All Status Effects](https://palworld-db.com/guides/all-status-effects).

> **Tip.** Keep one XS Watering Pal — [Pengullet](https://palworld-db.com/pal/pengullet) or [Kelpsea](https://palworld-db.com/pal/kelpsea) — permanently in your party even after you have a Watering 7 worker stationed. The stationed Pal handles fires it happens to be near; the party Pal is the one you throw at a fire it isn't. Both spawn in the thousands of spots, so keeping a spare costs nothing.

## The Short Version

Fire on the base: throw a Watering Pal at it, or disassemble the burning piece and get your materials back. Fire on you: get in water, or swap into heat-resistant armor, which puts it out and keeps your temperature down afterwards. Fire never again: hit level 19, rebuild in the Stone Structure Set at 3 Stone per wall, and skip the Japanese-Style set no matter how good it looks.
