# Beginner Fishing Rod (Chillet)

Bait it and cast at the shadows in the water to start hooking Pals. It suits newcomers, and low level Pals are what it reels in.

## Notes we already publish

- (location) The bench matters more than the recipe. Beginner rods are built at the High-Quality Workbench, and that is its own Technology 11 unlock costing 3 points plus 20 Wood, 10 Nail and 8 Ingot. Reach 15 without it already standing and fishing becomes a 5-point entry with 16 Ingot to smelt rather than 8, so a furnace and a copper route are the real prerequisite here. The production benches above it accept the recipe too, so nobody further along has to build backwards.
- (use) The two technology points buy a set, not a rod. The same node hands over Simple Bait, and bait is mandatory — the rod alone will not cast. That drags in a farming requirement the rod's own materials hide: one batch of bait wants 2 Flour, each Flour is 3 Wheat, so a mill and a wheat plot need to be turning before the rod does anything. The rate is generous once they are, since 2 Aquatic Pal Fluids, 4 Red Berries and 2 Flour yield ten baits at a time.
- (strategy) Simple Bait's two side-grades are much worse value than their descriptions imply. Beginner Bait slows the capture gauge's drain and Sweet Bait raises the bite rate, but each costs 4 Aquatic Pal Fluids, 2 Red Berries and 1 Flour for a single bait — against 2 Fluids for ten on the plain version, that is twenty times the fluid per cast. Fish the ordinary stuff on Simple Bait and save the variants for a shadow you would be annoyed to lose.
- (strategy) Expect to keep this rod for a long time. The Gumoss version is the same tier with half again the durability, but it is not on the Technology tree at all — it needs its schematic to turn up, and its build doubles every material and adds 3 Manganese Ore. The next rod the tree actually gives you is fourteen levels out at 29, and it wants a Production Assembly Line standing under it. Barring a schematic find, 120 durability is the whole early and mid game.
- (strategy) Read the water before you cast. Small shadows are ordinary Pals, while the medium and large ones in the same spot are where the boss variants come from — the same species, a much harder minigame. On a beginner rod the small shadows are the ones that pay, and a level 11 Croajiro or Fuack pulled from open water is a Pal you would otherwise have to hunt on foot.
