- (location) The plantation line on this page has a gate behind it: the Lettuce Plantation is a technology at level 25 and costs 2 points, then 100 [[item:Wood]], 70 [[item:Stone]], 10 Aquatic Pal Fluids ([[item:PalFluid]]) and 3 [[item:LettuceSeeds]] to place. The seeds are the part you cannot craft — buy them at 40 Gold each from the same caravan, desert and volcano merchants that stock the lettuce itself, so the first plot costs 120 Gold in seed money. Only the three seeds are consumed; the plot keeps producing after that.
- (use) A plot needs Planting, Watering and Gathering all covered by the Pals working your base, and it stalls on whichever one is missing rather than running slowly — a base with two planters and no waterer harvests nothing. Watering is the suitability most bases are short on, so check that before you place the plot. Once staffed it turns out 10 lettuce every 5.5 minutes, which is 800 Gold of merchant lettuce per cycle against a one-time 120 Gold of seeds; the plot pays for itself on its first harvest and buying lettuce by hand stops making sense the moment it is running.
- (strategy) Nothing else on the lettuce recipe list matters next to [[item:Cake03]] — Vegetable Cake eats 7 lettuce and 8 [[item:Tomato]] per cake, and cake is what the breeding farm burns. One lettuce plot and one tomato plot side by side is the standard setup for keeping a ranch fed; if you are breeding seriously, build the lettuce plot for the cake, not for the salad.
