## Notes we already publish

- (use) Owning an Electric Furnace is not enough to make this. Plasteel is its own entry on the Technology tree at level 50, six levels above the furnace that smelts it, and until you spend the point the recipe simply is not in the furnace menu. Level 50 is a busy rung — Computer and the Crude Oil Extractor unlock on the same line — so if you are climbing toward Plasteel gear, budget three separate technology points for that one level rather than one.
- (use) A single Plasteel is a 200,000-work job, which is what makes it feel so much slower than everything else that comes out of the same furnace. For scale: a Refined Ingot ([[item:IronIngot]]) is 7,000 and a Pal Metal Ingot ([[item:StealIngot]]) is 50,000, so one Plasteel costs as much furnace time as four Pal Metal or roughly twenty-eight Refined. Only Hexolite ([[item:StainlessSteel]]) and Coralum Ingot are worse at 500,000. The furnace only accepts Kindling Pals, and rank 1 clears the requirement — so throughput here is decided almost entirely by how much total Kindling you can stack on the station, not by having the right Pal. A full crew of high-rank Kindling is the difference between an armour set this evening and an armour set tomorrow.
- (use) The oil half of the recipe automates completely once you hit level 50, because that is also where the Crude Oil Extractor unlocks. Planted on an oil field it needs no Pal assigned at all: it self-runs at 120 work per second against the 8,000 work a barrel of [[item:CrudeOil]] costs, so roughly 67 seconds per barrel, unattended, forever. Two barrels per Plasteel makes that about two and a quarter minutes of pumping for each ingot — comfortably faster than the furnace can consume them, so one extractor keeps a furnace fed and the queue backs up on Kindling instead. The catch is power: the extractor draws four times what the Electric Furnace does, so it wants its own generator rather than a share of the base's existing one.
- (strategy) Bank 150 Plasteel before you spend any of it on gear. The Gigantic Furnace at level 58 costs exactly that, and it is the only upgrade that fixes the bottleneck above — it is built wide so several Pals can work one station instead of queueing for a small one. Building it out of the very material it accelerates is the trap: players who burn their first two hundred on a Plasteel Armour set end up smelting the furnace materials at the slow rate anyway. Note that it runs three times as hot on power as the Electric Furnace, so plan the generator with the build. Further out, the Ancient Furnace at level 66 is the one station in the chain that asks for no Kindling Pal whatsoever, and it advertises itself as smelting every ingot type — worth knowing before you commit a late base layout to a row of Gigantic Furnaces.
