An odd shield built on Paldium technology. Leave it undamaged long enough and it mends itself.

## Notes we already publish

- (use) No special bench is involved. The Primitive Workbench you built in the first ten minutes takes this recipe, and so does every general-purpose bench above it — High-Quality Workbench, both Production Assembly Lines, the Advanced Workshop and the Ancient Workbench. Nothing about the shield line ever forces you to keep an old bench standing, which is not true of the weapon and Pal-gear families.
- (strategy) Build it the moment you hit level 4, because nothing replaces it for a very long time. The next rung, Mega Shield ([[item:Shield_02]]), is a level 16 technology, so this 100-point buffer is the whole of your shield slot across twelve levels — the entire first-boss stretch. Two technology points is the cheapest defensive purchase available at that level, and the recipe is four base-tier gathers with no ingot, no bench upgrade and no schematic.
- (use) The 100 shield is not a fourth of a health bar you have to heal back — it refills itself once you stop taking hits, which at level 4 is the only self-repairing defence you own. That changes how you fight rather than how long you survive one fight: back off between exchanges, let it fill, re-engage. Against a chip-damage source (a pack of low-level Pals, an alpha's ranged pokes) it can absorb the whole encounter; against anything that hits for more than 100 in one swing it buys you exactly one mistake.
- (trivia) The shield ladder climbs steeply and unevenly once it starts: 100 here, 260 on [[item:Shield_02]] at level 16, 540 on [[item:Shield_03]] at 29, 1,045 on [[item:Shield_04]] at 43. Every one of those rungs is a 2-3 point technology, so the shield line is one of the best point-for-point returns in the tree — worth budgeting for at each of those four levels rather than saving up for later.
