## Notes we already publish

- (location) Swinging a pickaxe is not the only supply line. The Stone Pit unlocks at Technology 7 for 2 points and builds for 50 [[item:Stone]], 20 [[item:Wood]] and 10 [[item:Pal_crystal_S]], and once a Pal with Mining suitability is working your base it produces Stone on its own with nobody at the keyboard. Level 7 is early enough that the 50-Stone entry fee is one or two rock nodes, and it is the difference between mining every wall segment by hand and coming back from an expedition to a full box.
- (strategy) A Stone Pit only runs as fast as the Pal you park on it, and 57 Pals carry Mining suitability. Early on you are picking from Mining 1 — [[pal:PinkCat]], [[pal:NegativeKoala]], [[pal:Boar]] and [[pal:CuteMole]] are all in the starting zone and all count. The ceiling is much higher later: [[pal:DomeArmorDragon]] tops the list at Mining 8, [[pal:BlackMetalDragon]] and [[pal:KingBahamut]] sit at 7, [[pal:Anubis]] at 6. Do not retire the pit once ore mining opens either — the Coal Quarry at Technology 37, Sulfur Quarry at 46, Pure Quartz Quarry at 52 and Soralite Quarry at 72 each cost 70 Stone to build, so every later resource pit is paid for in stone first.
- (use) The single heaviest Stone order in the game is the Large-Scale Stone Oven, Technology 49 for 5 points. Its recipe never names Stone — it asks for 200 Cement, 200 Charcoal, 25 High Quality Wooden Boards and 13 Cryogenic Coolant — but one Cement craft turns 20 Stone, 1 Bone and 1 Aquatic Pal Fluids into ten Cement, so the real bill underneath is 400 Stone plus 20 Bone and 20 Aquatic Pal Fluids. Nothing else in the tree comes close: the Improved Furnace works out to 160 Stone once its own 30 Cement is unpacked, the Pal Expedition Station to 140, and no recipe anywhere asks for more than 100 Stone by name.
- (use) Perimeter defense is the other place Stone leaves in bulk. The fence ladder runs Wooden Defensive Wall at Technology 8 for 1 point, Stone Defensive Wall at Technology 19 for 2 points, then Metal Defensive Wall at Technology 30 for 1 point. The wooden segment costs 10 Wood and the game itself admits it breaks easily; the stone segment costs 10 Stone and is what you actually live behind for the eleven levels between 19 and 30. Reaching 30 does not end the Stone bill either — the metal segment wants 10 Ingot plus Cement, and Cement is 20 Stone a batch, so stone keeps feeding the wall line after the material stops being named on it. Wall Torch at Technology 14 is the other cheap early sink at 5 Wood and 2 Stone a piece, and lighting a walled perimeter takes more of them than you expect.
- (strategy) Cement is where that 400 Stone actually costs you time, not the mining. A batch is 30,000 work for ten, so the oven's 200 Cement is 20 batches and 600,000 work, with another 200,000 sitting in its 200 Charcoal at 1,000 apiece. Start the Cement line running several levels before 49 rather than after the research clears. Converting on site to save carry weight is not worth a trip either — 20 Stone weighs 60 and the ten Cement it becomes weighs 50, so the whole 400-Stone haul only drops from 1,200 to 1,000. Mine near the base, or park a chest by the rocks and let a hauling Pal do the walking.
- (strategy) Price a stone wall before you commit to one. Each segment is 10 Stone, which is 30 weight in your bags and 120 Gold if you would rather buy it from the Wandering Trader at 12 Gold a unit. Ringing a base is rarely under twenty segments, so budget around 200 Stone and 600 weight — several round trips on foot, or one purchase of about 2,400 Gold if you are sitting on merchant money and short on time. Since walls are placed one at a time from what is in your inventory, stage the stone in a chest at the build site first rather than mining, walking back, and discovering you can carry four more segments.
