Handgun
Weapon · WeaponHandgun4★Sidearm carrying more rounds and a faster trigger than the Makeshift Handgun, so it puts out damage quicker.
Handgun is 8th of 24 handguns by attack, at 625 against the 1,500 of Old Revolver.
Nothing is crafted from it — it is an end product, so anything you make is meant to be used rather than banked as a component.
Details
It does not stack, so every spare copy costs an inventory slot. At 42,000 gold it is worth real money to a merchant.
Handgun Crafting Recipe
Crafting it takes 132 materials across 3 types, and the bottleneck is almost always the 100× requirement — line that up first and the rest follows.
Where to Find Handgun
The recipe is not on the Technology tree — it is locked behind a schematic you have to find first. The best single source is crates on the oil rigs at 1.8% per container, and the table below lists every tier and where each one drops.
One Pal in the whole game carries Handgun Schematic 4, and it has to be the Alpha — the level 27 Vaelet standing at its own fixed spot in the Forest, at 3% per kill. Warp to Ancient Ritual Site: it sits roughly twice as close to that spot as the next nearest travel point, Cinnamoth Forest, so the reset loop is short. Wild Vaelet are no substitute. They roam 32 spots at level 20 to 57 and their table is Low Grade Medical Supplies and Tomato and Onion Seeds, with no schematic in it anywhere. The misses are cheap either way: every Alpha clear leaves 4 to 5 Ancient Civilization Parts and this recipe asks for 2, so the kill that finally pays out arrives with the one material you cannot mine already covered.
The 3% is not a Vaelet figure. Every boss in the game holding a Legendary schematic — 23 of them, weapons and armour together — hands it over at exactly that rate, so the odds never tell you which one to farm. The fight does, and this is one of the softest. Of the 21 that are fixed field Alphas, level 27 Vaelet is the sixth lowest, and among the firearms only Fenglope at 25 with the Makeshift Handgun comes earlier: Blazehowl's Musket waits until 30, Verdash's Single-Shot Rifle until 35, and the ladder runs all the way up to Jetragon at 70. Vaelet is Grass with 120 defence, so a Fire attacker ends it quickly and the level 27 cap keeps the fight honest even if you arrive underlevelled.
Using Handgun Well
The bench is the other reason this one lands early. Of the 60 Legendary weapons with a recipe, only 7 are assembled at the plain Weapon Workbench — 17 need the Weapon Assembly Line, 13 the Assembly Line II, 10 the Ancient Workbench and the remainder sit higher again — and this Handgun is one of the 7, alongside the makeshift stopgaps, the Musket and the Sword. That workbench is level 20 for 3 Technology points, so it is already standing before the Alpha is worth approaching, and eight levels before the tree's own Handgun entry at 28, which only ever hands you the 250-attack base gun for another 3 points. Bring the schematic on your person when you walk up to the bench; a copy sitting in a base chest never adds the recipe to the menu.
Every rarity uses that same workbench, which makes the 3★ copy a real decision rather than a formality. Work doubles at each rung — 200,000, 400,000, 800,000, then 1,600,000 here — and Ancient Civilization Parts enter only at the top two, one for the 3★ and two for this. Stepping up from 3★ therefore costs double the bench time and a second Ancient Part to buy 625 attack over 562 and a 16-round magazine over 14. Extra materials do nothing for the queue, so if the crafting time is what hurts, stack the bench with high-rank Handiwork Pals before you start rather than hoarding Ingot.
Crafting the gun at 20 opens a hole the schematic does not close: Handgun Ammo is its own research at level 28 for 1 point, and until that unlocks there is no way to make a single round. Shops bridge it — the Caravan, Desert, Dungeon, Volcano and Wander stocks all list it at 40 gold — so one filled 16-round magazine runs 640 gold, and the wait becomes a money problem instead of a level one. After the research it is 1 Ingot and 1 Gunpowder for 20 rounds, which is the point where the weapon stops being a boss-fight tool you ration and becomes something you can patrol with.
Compare it against the free version before you decide the Alpha is worth the hours. The tree gun at 28 is 250 attack, 8 rounds and 400 durability, built from 50 Ingot and 15 High Quality Pal Oil at 50,000 work. This one asks 100 Ingot and 30 High Quality Pal Oil — exactly double the materials for two and a half times the attack, twice the magazine and six times the durability. Materials are not what you pay. Work is: 1,600,000 against 50,000, a queue thirty-two times as long, plus the two Ancient Civilization Parts. And the lower schematics are not consolation prizes. Handgun Schematic 1 costs 62 Ingot and 18 Oil at 200,000 work for 437 attack, 10 rounds and 1,200 durability, already past the tree gun on every line and with no Ancient Parts anywhere in it; Schematic 2 is 75 and 22 for 500 attack, 12 rounds, 1,600 durability. Build whichever rung lands first — an eighth of the bench time for two thirds of the gun is the better trade while the 3% is still missing.
Attack is the wrong number to judge this handgun by. 625 is only joint third among the Legendary handguns — the Old Revolver hits 1,500, the Makeshift Handgun 800, and the Marksman Revolver matches this one exactly. The magazine is where it wins: 16 rounds against the flat 6 that every revolver and every makeshift handgun carries, which is 10,000 damage on one full load against the Old Revolver's 9,000 and the Makeshift's 4,800, the most of any handgun in the game. Its 2,400 durability is the class high too. That makes it the handgun you actually clear a camp with, and leaves the Old Revolver as the thing you swap to for one heavy burst into something large.
Every Tier of Handgun
The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: attack runs 250 to 625, a 2.5x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.
Ammunition Handgun Uses
Handgun fires Handgun Ammo, and nothing else — running dry mid-fight is the usual way this weapon lets you down, so keep the recipe unlocked before you rely on it.
| Ammo | Yield | Craft cost |
|---|---|---|
| ×20 | Ingot ×1, Gunpowder ×1 |
Schematics That Unlock Handgun
The Technology tree hands you the plain Handgun at level 28 for 3 Technology points, but nothing above that base version — the rarer builds are schematic-only. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.
Fastest route. Two routes to the top-tier Handgun schematic, and they are not measured in the same thing: about 33 kills hunting it directly from vaelet (alpha), or roughly 258 containers farming the 3★ copy from treasure map digs (tier 1) and fusing five. Which is faster depends on how long one of each takes you. Schematics fuse five-to-one, so a lower tier with better odds can beat the top tier outright. Counts are containers of that source, not time.
| Schematic | Rarity | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|

Alternatives and Upgrades
Step up from here and you get Makeshift Handgun at 640 attack; step down and it is Marksman Revolver at 625. That gap is the honest measure of whether an upgrade is worth the materials right now.
