Using Stone Pickaxe Well
The recipe costs 500 units of crafting work, which puts it among the ten cheapest builds in the game — the median recipe is 40,000, and the Metal Pickaxe that replaces it costs 5,000, ten times as much. A single Handiwork Pal at the first Primitive Workbench finishes one almost as fast as you can drop the Stone and Wood into the slot, so there is never a reason to queue this behind anything else.
Because a replacement is 5 stone, 5 wood and a couple of seconds of bench time, hauling a spare on a mining run beats walking a worn one home. Two of them weigh 20 and cover 300 durability of swings; you only need to think about repair materials once you are on the metal tier, where the same craft costs ten times the work.
