Semi-Auto Shotgun
Weapon · WeaponShotgun4★Cycles shells quickly and hits enormously hard — its point-blank damage is about as good as it gets.
Semi-Auto Shotgun is an early shotgun: 30th of 40 by attack, so treat it as a stepping stone, at 282 against the 1,400 of Prototype Shotgun.
It feeds no other recipe, which makes it a terminal item: craft what you will actually carry and stop there.
Details
At 20 weight each it eats carry capacity fast, so bring a mount or park a chest nearby. At 163,200 gold it is worth real money to a merchant.
Semi-Auto Shotgun Crafting Recipe
Crafting it takes 164 materials across 4 types, and the bottleneck is almost always the 100× requirement — line that up first and the rest follows.
Where to Find Semi-Auto Shotgun
The recipe is not on the Technology tree — it is locked behind a schematic you have to find first. The best single source is treasure map digs (tier 3) at 1.7% per container, and the table below lists every tier and where each one drops.
Using Semi-Auto Shotgun Well
The whole Semi-Auto Shotgun line sits behind a single technology node at Level 47 costing 4 points. The legendary rarity does not get its own tech entry — the schematic only changes what that one recipe outputs. Research the Level 47 node first, or the schematic sits in your bag doing nothing.
This is the most expensive shotgun in the game to actually build, and not just in materials — the legendary recipe carries 32x the crafting work of the base version, with the work cost doubling at every rarity step. Queue it at a production line staffed with your best Handiwork pals and expect it to occupy them for a long stretch; starting it right before a boss run is a mistake.
Judged on raw damage this is the weakest legendary shotgun — 282 attack lands below the Pump-Action (Pump-Action Shotgun) at 385, the Double-Barreled (Double-Barreled Shotgun) at 399 and even the Makeshift (Makeshift Shotgun) at 376. What it buys instead is staying power: 14 shells is the deepest magazine of any Shotgun Shell (Shotgun Shell) weapon, and 1200 durability is half again the 800 that the Pump-Action, Double-Barreled and Makeshift all share. Bring it to long fights where you cannot break contact to reload or repair, and bring the Pump-Action when you need a target dead in the first few shells.
Crafting this rarity is gated on Semi-Auto Shotgun Schematic 4 (Semi-Auto Shotgun Schematic 4), and the drop rates are brutal: the single best place to farm it is crates on the large oil rig at roughly 1.5% per crate. Everything else is a fraction of a percent — Snowfields chests around 0.16%, Mount Obsidian supply drops 0.07%, and enemy camp boss stashes in the Snowfields and Sakurajima under 0.1% each. The oil rig is worth the trip; nothing else on the list is a realistic target.
You can also build the schematic instead of finding it. Five copies of any tier fuse into one of the next tier at a workbench, so 5x Schematic 3 (Semi-Auto Shotgun Schematic 3) becomes the Schematic 4 you need — which works out to 125 copies of the base Schematic 1 if you start from the bottom. Since the low tiers drop at 8.4% from Mount Obsidian supply drops against 0.07% for the top one, grinding the common tier and fusing upward is often faster than praying for the direct roll. Do not sell or scrap spare low-rarity Semi-Auto Shotgun schematics.
Every Tier of Semi-Auto Shotgun
The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: attack runs 195 to 282, a 1.4x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.
| Rarity | Item | Attack | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0★ | Semi-Auto Shotgun | 195 | 300 |
| 1★ | Semi-Auto Shotgun | 214 | 450 |
| 2★ | Semi-Auto Shotgun | 234 | 600 |
| 3★ | Semi-Auto Shotgun | 253 | 900 |
| 4★ | Semi-Auto Shotgun (this one) | 282 | 1200 |
Ammunition Semi-Auto Shotgun Uses
Semi-Auto Shotgun fires Shotgun Shell, and nothing else — running dry mid-fight is the usual way this weapon lets you down, so keep the recipe unlocked before you rely on it.
| Ammo | Yield | Craft cost |
|---|---|---|
| ×10 | Refined Ingot ×2, Gunpowder ×3 |
Schematics That Unlock Semi-Auto Shotgun
The Technology tree hands you the plain Semi-Auto Shotgun at level 47 for 4 Technology points, but nothing above that base version — the rarer builds are schematic-only. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.
Fastest route. The fastest route is treasure map digs (tier 3), and the reason is the ladder rather than the top rung: that pool stocks every tier, so the common copies it hands you fuse upward into the one you want. Counting them, a top-tier Semi-Auto Shotgun schematic works out at roughly 33 containers against the 59 the 4★ drop rate alone suggests. Spare low tiers are progress, not clutter. Schematics fuse five-to-one, so a lower tier with better odds can beat the top tier outright. Counts are containers of that source, not time.
| Schematic | Rarity | Where it comes from |
|---|---|---|
| 4★ | Treasure map digs (tier 3), Crates on the large oil rig, Snowfields sea base camp stashes +5 more — best 1.7% (grade 5/6) · Supply drops in the Mount Obsidian (0.07%) |
Alternatives and Upgrades
Double-Barreled Shotgun sits just above it at 285 attack — only 3 more, close enough that it is a sidegrade rather than an upgrade. The next real step is Makeshift Shotgun at 290; below it is Pump-Action Shotgun at 275.
