Using Lockpicking Tool v3 Well
The recipe sits on the Technology tree at level 53 and costs 3 Ancient Technology Points, so it is a late unlock competing with your other ancient spends. The lower rungs are much cheaper — Lockpicking Tool v1 at level 16 for 1 point and Lockpicking Tool v2 at level 25 for 2 — and each rung answers a different lock: copper, silver, then the gold-locked chests this one handles.
A pick is spent when you use it, not returned on a failed attempt, so a single gold-locked chest can eat several. At 30 Pal Metal Ingot, 30 Paldium Fragment and 20 Nail a craft, batch them at a bench before a dungeon run rather than one at a time — they weigh nothing and stack to 9999, so there is no cost to hauling twenty.
Using one opens a lock-turning minigame instead of just popping the chest: you rotate the pick and have to stop inside the band where the cylinder gives. The game's picking presets set how wide that band is, from a fifth of the dial at the most forgiving down to a twentieth and, at the tightest preset, a hundredth — expect to feel for it in small increments rather than sweeping the dial.
Nothing about the tool is stronger than the key it replaces — it does not improve the chest's loot or its rarity roll. If you are already sitting on Gold Key stock, spend the keys and save the picks for chests you find while a key run is not worth the detour.
