Hardwood

Material · MaterialWood1

Timber picked out of the hardy trees that grow where conditions punish them — deserts, volcanic ground, snowbound peaks.

Hardwood feeds 26 different recipes, which is why it is worth farming past the point you think you need it.

Where to Find Hardwood

4 Pals drop Hardwood when defeated or captured, which is usually the faster route if you are already out hunting — the drop list below is sorted by how reliably each one gives it up.

If you would rather just buy it, the cheapest seller is Desert Shop at 100 Gold, and 3 other shops stock it too.

The pink cherry-blossom trees on Sakurajima are what you cut for this, and they are not the tree you have been chopping everywhere else. The game holds them as three separate objects with 1,000 HP each, where the ordinary choppable tree across the rest of Palpagos carries 4,500 — so a hardwood tree falls in under a quarter of the axe work a mainland one costs you, and a Pal on Lumbering clears a grove fast. Cherry Blossom Crossroads and Secluded Cemetery are the two fast travel points that put you inside the groves, so there is no long approach flight either.

Logging Site II is the version of the base facility that makes Hardwood, and its economics are worth reading before you commit to it. It needs 8,000 work per unit, where the plain Logging Site turns out ordinary Wood at 800 — ten times the labour for one piece. Against that, it asks only Lumbering rank 1 from its workers, the same bar the first Logging Site sets, and it holds three of them, so your existing loggers can staff it as they are. The gate is the build cost: 100 Hardwood, 50 Stone, 20 Paldium Fragment and 5 Ancient Civilization Parts, unlocked at Technology 43 for 3 Ancient Technology Points. The first hundred has to come off the trees by hand — the facility can never bootstrap itself.

The Ancient Material Synthesizer at Technology 78 produces wood without a grove at all, but its lumbering slot asks for Lumbering Lv 6, and only eight Pals in the game clear that bar: Celesdir Noct at 8, Celesdir and Hartalis at 7, and Bastigor, Cryolinx Terra, Necromus, Paladius and Silvegis at 6. Every one of those is a late-game capture, and the machine also draws 800 power, so this is an endgame convenience rather than a route out of the Hardwood bottleneck. If you already own one of the eight, check what else it is doing before you park it here.

Using Hardwood Well

Gumoss is the Pal to have in the party for a chopping run, and not only for the Logging bonus. Its partner skill names five materials outright — Wood, Hardwood, Mythical Wood, Ancient Bark and Fiber — and cuts the carry weight of exactly those by 40% at rank 1, rising to 60% at rank 5, while adding 30% to 50% to your own logging on top. Hardwood weighs 5.0 a unit, so 200 of it is 1,000 weight of a full inventory; with a rank 5 Gumoss along that same haul costs 400. On a resource this heavy the weight half of the skill is usually worth more than the speed half.
