Using Plasma Multicutter Well
The "special ores" in the description are Soralite, and the game only explains the method inside a Sunreach side quest: equip the Multicutter and aim at the fissures running through the node rather than at the body of the rock. Swinging a pickaxe at a Soralite vein is wasted time — there are 226 of them mapped, and every one of them needs this tool.
That makes level 54 the real gate on the top gear tier, not just on a better pickaxe: Soralite is what the Ancient Furnace turns into Soralite Ingot, so until the Multicutter is built the whole Soralite equipment line is closed to you no matter how much of Sunreach you have explored.
