Chromite
Material · MaterialOre0★A metal buried underground. On certain islands a Metal Detector will pick it up.
Chromite feeds 3 different recipes, which is why it is worth farming past the point you think you need it.

Where to Find Chromite
2 Pals drop Chromite when defeated or captured, which is usually the faster route if you are already out hunting — the drop list below is sorted by how reliably each one gives it up.
It also turns up in supply drops — best odds are the Feybreak drops at 100%, 30–40 per crate.
It also shows up as world loot — field drops in the Sunreach Isle, usually 1–5 at a time.
Sending a team on the Dark Cave of Feybreak and Ancient Feybreak Ruins expeditions brings some back without you leaving base.
The buried deposits the description hints at are invisible without the Metal Detector (Metal Detector), which sits at technology level 58 and costs 3 points. Nothing about chromite is gated behind that unlock — the supply drops, the two Feybreak expeditions and the Sunreach field drops all pay out without it — so treat the detector as the tool for topping up on foot while you are already out on a Feybreak island, not as the prerequisite for starting a chromite stock.

Using Chromite Well
There is no chromite quarry, and that is the single most important thing to know about farming it. Every other ore in the game has its own pit on the tech ladder — Stone Pit at 7, Ore Mining Site at 24, Coal Quarry at 37, Sulfur Quarry at 46, Pure Quartz Quarry at 52, Hexolite Quartz Mine at 62, Soralite Quarry at 72 — and chromite is the one that was left off it. The only base facility that produces it is the Ancient Material Synthesizer at technology 78, built from 50 Paloxite Ingot and 10 Ancient Civilization Core.
The synthesizer is a heavier commitment than its material cost suggests. It is a 1,000,000-work build, it runs on electricity rather than standing idle (800 drain per second in the build data, so wire the generator line first), and every one of its ten mining slots requires Mining rank 6 — a very short list of Pals, and you want several of them if you intend to keep it fed. The chromite cycle itself is 8,000 work with zero passive tick, so nothing at all accumulates while the assigned Pal is eating, sleeping or wandering off.
Weigh that against the expedition route before you commit a base to it: Dark Cave of Feybreak is 60 minutes at Hard for a guaranteed 30–50, costs no build slots, no power and no rank 6 Pal, and runs while you are doing something else. The synthesizer earns its place when you need chromite on demand rather than on a timer — for a stockpile, park a squad on the expedition and let it run overnight.
What Chromite Is For
Chromite is what the quest "Metal on Your Mind" asks you to bring — that is the reason it exists, and why holding on to one is worth more than selling it.
