Tricorne
Armor · ArmorHead4★Tricorne is 55th of 202 head pieces by defense, at 100 against the 650 of Ancient Helm.
Wearing it also carries the effect Water Damage Reduction Lv. 1, which matters more than the raw numbers in the biomes that punish you for the wrong outfit.
No recipe takes it as an ingredient. Whatever you build is the finished article, so there is no reason to hoard spares.
Details
It does not stack, so every spare copy costs an inventory slot.
Where to Find Tricorne
Tricorne is not something you find lying around — you craft it, and the recipe is below.
There is no technology unlock for the Tricorne — every rarity is gated behind its own schematic, and only the first one is buyable. Tricorne Schematic 1 is fixed stock at the desert shop for 500 gold, and it builds the 25-defense version. This rarity-4 hat needs the matching rarity-4 schematic in your bag before the recipe appears at all, so the shop copy is a starter, not a shortcut to this tier.
Using Tricorne Well
Water resistance does not scale with rarity. All five Tricornes carry the same Aqua resistance, so if the elemental cut is all you want, the cheap hat delivers it and the 49 leather buys you defense, HP and durability only.
This is the heaviest-hitting water-resistant headgear in the game. The Pal-themed caps that share the effect — Croajiro Cap, Gloopie Hat, Ghangler Accessory — sit at 20 defense, and no helmet line offers Aqua resistance at all. Against Aqua bosses you are choosing between 100 defense with the resist here or several hundred defense with none from Ancient Helm.
It shares its 100 defense and 280 HP exactly with Silk Hat, Soft Hat and Explorer Cap. Those four legendary hats are one stat block with four different resistances bolted on, so the pick is purely about the biome or the boss element, and the Tricorne is the only one of them that costs a single material.
The recipe never gains a second material: 49 Leather and nothing else, against 10 for the plain hat. What does climb is the work value — sixteen times the common tier — so this is a job for a bench with your strongest Handiwork pals on it rather than something to hold the craft button through.
Every Tier of Tricorne
The same piece exists at 5 rarities, and the gap is not cosmetic: defense runs 25 to 100, a 4x swing. Which one you end up with is decided by the rarity of the schematic you built from, not by the recipe — so a legendary copy of this is worth more than the next item up built from a common one.
What Tricorne Does
Tricorne grants Water Damage Reduction Lv. 1: Element Resist Water +15.
Schematics That Unlock Tricorne
Tricorne is not learned from the Technology tree — you need a schematic for it. One schematic grants the recipe, and they are world loot — chests, boss Pals and the late-game pools — rather than anything you research. Higher-rarity copies of the same schematic raise the quality of what you end up crafting.

Alternatives and Upgrades
Soft Hat matches it exactly at 100 defense — those two differ in what they resist and what they weigh, not in raw defense, so picking between them is a swap rather than an upgrade. The next real step is Monarch's Crown at 120; below it is Refined Metal Helm at 100.
