It weighs almost nothing and stacks to 9,999, so there is no reason not to carry a full stack.
Where to Find Dark Fragment
9 Pals drop Dark Fragment when defeated or captured, which is usually the faster route if you are already out hunting — the drop list below is sorted by how reliably each one gives it up.
It also shows up as world loot — field drops in the Feybreak and field drops in the Sunreach Isle.
Every farmable source of this material lives on Feybreak, and the clock decides which one you get. Omascul has the same spawn table by day and by night, while Splatterina has no daytime spawn points at all and Starryon has exactly one. A daylight run is an Omascul run and nothing else.
The three field sources cluster differently, so pick the waypoint by which Pal you want. Starryon is the most concentrated: 42% of its spawn points sit around Loess Plains and another 29% around Wildlands Floodgate. Splatterina is loosest around Scarlet Outlook (13%), then Crimson Labyrinth and Scorched Hill at 10% each. Omascul is spread thin across the whole island with no pocket above 7% — Crimson Cliffs, Crimson Labyrinth, Scarlet Outlook and The Oculus Gate, Tower in Sight all hold roughly the same share.

Using Dark Fragment Well
Night runs pay close to double per kill. Splatterina drops 2-3 at 100%, Omascul only 1-2 at the same rate, so the same number of fights after dark is worth far more than a daytime sweep — and Splatterina, Starryon and Omascul are all up at night, giving you three eligible targets instead of one.
Fast travel is the reset button. Once you have cleared the Pals around a waypoint, hop to any other fast-travel point and come straight back rather than waiting on the field — the area repopulates and you can run the same loop again. Bring a light source before doing this after dark; Feybreak nights are dark enough to lose a pack in.
