Bakemi
#168The thrill of scaring people is its entire reason for existing, and it is not the least bit scary. Most play along with fake gasps because it's cute, so it leaves a trail of smiles behind it.

How to Get Bakemi
Bakemi is Dark, so a Dragon attacker takes it down fastest — and a Pal it resists will drag the fight long enough for it to heal or flee.
Wild Bakemi spawn between level 65 and 69. The higher end resists spheres noticeably harder, so it is worth hunting the low-level spawns for your first catch and saving the high ones for a condenser stack.
Its capture rate is 1.0, which makes it exactly average, so weaken it properly and throw from behind for the back-strike bonus.
Sunreach Isle egg nests are the no-combat route in. That pool is only 16 Pals wide and completely flat - every one of them, Bakemi included, hatches at 6.07% across the island's 39 nests, with a 0.18% alpha roll. Nothing on Sunreach Isle is rare, so a nest circuit gets you one without ever fighting a level 65+ wild.
Playing Bakemi Well
Grinning Death only pays out against enemies that are already Poisoned, and Bakemi's own 47-move list contains no Poison attack at all - it cannot set up its own debuff. Bring the status from outside the pair: Poison Arrows or a poison-applying Pal on the field, then the party slot does the rest, stripping up to 80% of the target's Attack at rank 5. Without a poison source in the loadout the skill is dead weight, which is the whole reason its combat value reads so much lower than its base value.
At the base it is a two-job Pal that most players only staff for one: Medicine Production 4 is the headline, but Handiwork 3 plus a 100 craft speed stat means it keeps working the bench between potion batches instead of idling, and it takes to craft-speed passives well.
The nocturnal flag undersells the daytime hunt: 37 of its spawn points on Sunreach are daylight ones against 115 after dark. Density is roughly a third of the night figure, so a midday sweep still works and simply costs more walking - useful if you would rather not take a level 65-69 Dark pack on in the dark.
Of the 272 parent pairs that land on it, Vanwyrm x Vanwyrm Cryst is the one worth writing down - two forms of the same Pal, both catchable on the mainland long before Sunreach opens, so you can be hatching Bakemi eggs at the base while the island is still out of reach.
