Status effects decide more fights than raw damage — a frozen boss isn't fighting back, a soaked one is set up for the next hit, and two of these ailments even make Pals easier to catch. The game never lists them anywhere, so here's the full set with official names, the element behind each one, and how to use them on purpose.
Every Status Effect and Its Source Element
The ailments map onto elements almost one-to-one, and the mapping is strict — Soak comes from Water moves exclusively, Freeze only from Ice, Electrify only from Electric, Muddy only from Ground, and Ivy-Covered only from Grass. Dark is the double-dipper, carrying both Blind and nearly all of the game's rare Poison moves:
| Status | Inflicted By | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Burn | Fire moves, plus many Dragon moves | The most common ailment in the game — even Dragon attacks carry it |
| Soak | Water moves only | The wettest setup state; every soaking move is Water |
| Freeze | Ice moves only | Also powers a capture trick covered below |
| Electrify | Electric moves only | Electric's signature lockdown |
| Blind | Dark moves only | Dark's bread-and-butter debuff |
| Poison | Mostly Dark moves | Rare — only a handful of moves inflict it |
| Muddy | Ground moves only | Ground's slow-down ailment |
| Ivy-Covered | Grass moves only | Roots the target — and helps captures too |
| Stun | A few Neutral and Ground moves | Rare crowd control |
| Comatose | Special sources | The sleep state |
| Bear Trap | Traps | The leg-hold from placed traps |
On top of the ailments, the same system drives three friendly effects — Attack Up, Defense Up, and Recovery — which is why some support moves and partner skills list them with the same badge style in-game.
How Reliably Do Attacks Proc These?
More reliably than most players assume: nearly three-quarters of all ailment-carrying moves apply their status at a high proc value — very often a guaranteed 100% — with Soak, Poison, and Freeze the most dependable and Blind the streakiest of the set. The practical read: if you want a status on a boss, you don't need a specific move — you need sustained pressure from the right element. Any strong attacker from that element's roster on the tier list gets it done, and the attack-element converters let your own weapon join in.
The Status Capture Tricks
Two ailments feed directly into catching Pals, via partner skills covered in the support roster:
- Muffly adds bonus capture power against frozen targets — pair it with any Ice attacker, freeze, then throw
- Souffline does the same against Ivy-Covered targets, with Grass moves as the setup
- Both scale up to +5 capture power at max rank, and they stack with sphere modules Against a high-level target, the freeze-and-throw routine is the single biggest capture-odds swing you can set up deliberately.
