How to Craft Bat: Materials, Stats, and Metal Bat Upgrade — Palworld Database

The Bat is the cheapest damage spike in the early game: one Technology Point at level 7 turns 30 Wood and 10 Stone into the hardest-hitting melee weapon you can carry for the next six levels. This guide has its exact stats, the full material cost and where to farm it, how it measures up against every other early melee option, and the Metal Bat line it eventually becomes.

Bat Stats and Unlock Requirements

The Bat is a Common-rarity melee weapon that unlocks at technology level 7 for a single point — the cheapest weapon unlock in that whole stretch of the tree. Its 50 attack is the number that matters: nothing else you can swing before level 13 comes close, and it costs half the points a Stone Spear does. The catch is durability. At 150 it matches the Wooden Club you were beating Lamballs with on day one, and it is the lowest durability of any melee weapon in the game that hits for 50 or more.

How to Craft the Bat

Spend the point in the technology menu at level 7 and the Bat appears in your normal crafting list right away — it carries no special bench requirement, unlike the Sword, which explicitly demands a Weapon Workbench before you can build one. The materials are the two things you already have piles of. Wood comes off the Lumber nodes marked across the whole island, and Stone comes off both boulder types, so a single trip around your base usually covers the entire 40-material bill in one go.

MaterialQtyWhere to farm it
Wood304,654 Lumber nodes on the lumber layer; Wandering Traders also sell it for 12 Gold each
Stone108,157 Rock and 4,286 Small Rock nodes on the rock layer; Wandering Traders sell it for 12 Gold each

Buying is a trap here unless you are genuinely out of time — 40 materials from a Wandering Trader is 480 Gold for a weapon that breaks after a few fights, while a Lumbering and Mining Pal on a base bench refills the same stock for free while you are logged out. Park a couple of gatherers and craft the Bat two or three at a time.

Bat vs Every Other Early Melee Weapon

Compared against the other melee weapons available in the same window, the Bat is the clear pick from level 7 onward — and it is not close. It out-damages the Stone Spear by 15 for half the point cost, and even the Metal Axe and Meat Cleaver you unlock a few levels later hit for less, because those are tools that happen to swing rather than weapons. Nothing dethrones it until the Metal Spear arrives at level 13 with 80 attack and better reach. Attack numbers below only compare inside the melee class — a bow or a handgun of the same era is a completely different scale.

12Meat Cleaver253002

Divide attack by points spent and the gap gets sillier: the Bat returns 50 attack per Technology Point, and the next best deal in that stretch is the Metal Spear at 40. If you are rationing points because you also want a gun unlocked early, this is the one melee purchase that never feels wasted.

TipCraft two Bats before you leave base. 150 durability disappears fast against anything with real HP, and a broken weapon mid-fight is worse than a heavy backpack — each one only weighs 3. Also keep a Stun Baton in a spare slot for catching: it only hits for 10, but electrocuted Pals are much easier to capture, so it does a job the Bat never can.

Metal Bat: The Level 40 Upgrade

The Bat's upgrade path picks back up at technology level 40, where three points buy the Metal Bat — 500 attack, ten times the wooden version, and 500 durability to go with it. For the four levels between unlocking it and reaching the Katana at 44, it is the strongest melee weapon you can craft, and it stays a fine backup long after. The recipe moves up a tier too: Hardwood instead of Wood, and Refined Ingots instead of Stone.

All Metal Bat Rarity Tiers and Materials

Like most craftable weapons, the Metal Bat has four upgraded rarities on top of the base recipe, each one unlocked by holding the matching schematic. Attack climbs gently — 500 to 750 across the whole ladder — but durability quadruples, from 500 to 2,000, which is really what you are buying. The Legendary roll also demands 32 times the crafting work of the Common one, so queue it on a bench with a proper Handiwork crew rather than swinging the hammer yourself. Worth being honest about the ceiling: even at 750 attack, the Legendary Metal Bat still lands just under the Katana's 780.

Where Metal Bat Schematics Drop

All four Metal Bat schematics share one hunting ground: the Desert, Mount Obsidian and the Snowfields. Every schematic in the game uses the same scroll icon in your inventory, which is why the bat itself is pictured here instead. The Uncommon schematic is genuinely common loot — better than one in ten from Desert chests and from Snowfields camp boss stashes — but the odds fall off a cliff after that, and the Legendary version sits at roughly one in two hundred from its single best source. The standout detail is where those better rolls concentrate: sea base enemy camps in the Desert pay out the Rare, Epic and Legendary schematics at four to five times the rate of anything else, and there are only 10 of them on the sea base camp layer against 48 regular enemy camps. Clear those ten on rotation and ignore the rest.

If camps are not your thing, the same schematics turn up in treasure chests and, oddly, on the end of a fishing line in all three regions at near-identical rates. The Desert holds 263 chests and Mount Obsidian 137 on the chest layers, and the Snowfields roll includes the Astral Mountains Cavern. Any of it beats waiting on supply drops, which cap out at 12.65% for the Uncommon schematic and 0.10% for the Legendary.

Farming Hardwood and Refined Ingots

Hardwood is the material that stalls most Metal Bat crafts, and there is a shortcut most players miss: four Pals drop it at a guaranteed 100% rate every time you defeat or catch them, and all four are ordinary overworld spawns. Wumpo Botan is the best of them at 2-5 per kill. Otherwise, Desert, Village and Volcano shops all stock Hardwood at 100 Gold a piece alongside Wandering Traders, which is worth it when you are 10 short of a craft and not worth it when you are 60 short.

PalHardwood per dropDrop rate
Wumpo Botan2-5100%
Palumba2-4100%
Mossanda1-3100%
Mossanda Lux1-3100%

Refined Ingots are pure furnace work: each one takes 2 Ore and 2 Coal, so the 20 ingots for a base Metal Bat mean 40 of each, and the Legendary recipe's 40 ingots mean 80 of each. Ore is the easier half with 1,632 nodes on the ore layer; Coal is the bottleneck at 824 nodes, concentrated in the volcanic and desert regions. The ore farming guide covers how to set up a mining base that keeps both stocked without you flying back and forth.

TipShort version: spend one point on the Bat at level 7, craft a spare, and stop thinking about melee until level 40. The Bat carries you to the Metal Spear, guns take over from there, and the Metal Bat is only worth chasing once you have a Legendary schematic and a Hardwood supply — at which point the Drafting Table can push a lower-rarity schematic up the ladder for you instead of waiting on a 0.50% drop.
