List of All Pals by Defense Stat and Best Tank Pals — Palworld Database

Defense decides how much of every hit a Pal actually eats, and the spread across the Paldeck is huge — the top of the board sits at 200 while the bottom sits at 50, so the same hit lands completely differently depending on who is taking it. This is the full list of Pals by Defense stat, ranked from Panthalus down, with what each one is worth at level 60, where to catch it, and every way to push the number higher.

Defense Stat at a Glance

Defense is one of the three combat stats a Pal carries into a fight, alongside HP and Attack, and it works as a multiplier on how long the health bar lasts rather than a flat chunk shaved off each hit. It grows with level from a small flat floor, which is why two Pals a hundred base points apart still feel close at level 5 and feel nothing alike at level 60. These are Pal numbers only — your own armored Defense total runs on a completely different scale and the two never touch.

Top 10 Pals by Defense Stat

The top of this list is lopsided. Panthalus and Astralym both sit at 200, a full 38% clear of Paladius in third, and after that the tiers step down in fives. Astralym is the World Tree boss you fight rather than a Pal you keep — it has no partner skill and no work suitability at all — so in practice Panthalus is the ceiling. Ignore the raw ranking for a moment and the honest picks are Knocklem, whose Steel Guardian Mode adds more Defense on demand than any species gap on this table, and Tetroise, which is the only Pal in the top ten with a wild spawn you can farm properly.

PalElementBase DefenseLv 60 DefenseWhere to find itWhy it works

The Lv 60 column assumes a zero potential roll, which is the floor. A perfect 100 potential multiplies the growth by 1.3 and turns Panthalus's 950 into 1,220, Paladius's 702 into 898, and Tetroise's 657 into 839 — a bigger swing than dropping two whole tiers on this table, which is why the roll matters more than the species once you are inside the top twenty. Aegidron and Frostallion Noct are alpha-only fights at Lv 79 and Lv 65, so plan the gear before the trip.

Every Pal Ranked by Defense Stat

Here is the whole roster, banded by base Defense and sorted from the top down. Every value is the species base before level, potential, passives or condensing touch it, so use it to pick a line and expect the real number to land well above it. The bands are where the useful decisions live: everything at 120 and up is a genuine tank, the 100 to 115 block is where most of the good mounts sit, and anything under 70 is going to fold to a single alpha hit no matter what you feed it.

Defense 120 and Above: The Tank Tier

Forty-one Pals clear 120, and this is the band you actually build a combat team out of. Mimog is the outlier worth knowing about — 130 Defense with 5,302 spawn spots, more than every other Pal in this band put together, so it is the only genuinely tanky line you can roll-hunt in an afternoon instead of farming one fixed alpha over and over. The catch is 60 HP, the lowest in the band by a distance, so its damage reduction is protecting a very short health bar. Turtacle Terra at 773 spots and Digtoise at 660 are the next two you can farm at volume.

Defense 100 to 115: The Working Middle

Eighty-three Pals land here, and it is the most useful band on the page because it is where the mounts, the haulers and the base workers live. A Pal at 110 reaches 545 Defense at level 60 against a 120's 590 — an 8% gap that a single Burly Body roll erases completely, so pick on partner skill and mount speed in this range rather than on the stat. Turtacle at 115 and 1,456 spawn spots is the easy default, and Omascul at 1,621 spots is the most common Pal in the entire band.

Defense 85 to 95: Below Average but Serviceable

Fifty-nine Pals sit just under the 94 roster average. Nothing here is a tank, but a 90 Defense line with a good four-passive roll still ends up harder than a 120 with nothing on it — Diamond Body and Legend together are +50%, which is worth more than the entire gap from this band to the top of the previous one. Smokie at 1,620 spawn spots is the most farmable line in the band, so it is the sensible one to grind passives into if you are chasing a roll rather than a species.

Defense 70 to 80: The Common Band

Ninety-one Pals — nearly a third of the Paldeck — sit at 80, 75 or 70, which makes this the default the game hands you for most of the early game. At level 60 a base 70 line reaches 365 Defense, a bit over a third of what Panthalus manages, so these are Pals you field for their work suitability or their partner skill and then swap out of a real fight. Bushi Noct is the standout at 1,990 spawn spots, the highest count anywhere in the band.

Defense Below 70: The Glass Tier

Fourteen Pals fall under 70, bottoming out at 50 for Fuddler, Leezpunk and Leezpunk Ignis. At level 60 that is 275 Defense against Panthalus's 950, so a hit that costs Panthalus a sliver takes a real bite out of these. None of them belong in a boss fight, but several are excellent base workers, and Defense does nothing at all for a Pal that never leaves the ranch or the crafting bench.

Highest Defense Pals You Can Actually Farm

Ranking by base Defense alone puts three fixed alphas and a boss you cannot keep at the top, which is not much help when you want a tank tonight. These are the Pals at 120 or higher with enough wild spawn spots to hunt for a good potential roll and the passives you want, sorted by how many places they turn up. Every location links straight to the pre-filtered map.

Mimog wins on availability by an order of magnitude and nothing else comes close, so if you just want a high-Defense body with four good passives, that is the grind. If you want a tank that also carries the fight, Knocklem Ignis at 58 spots is the better target — Iron Guardian Mode hands it up to +210% Defense and Ranged Attack at rank 5, which is a bigger jump than every species step on this page combined.

How to Raise a Pal's Defense

Base Defense is fixed by species, but almost everything on top of it is yours to move, and four of the five levers stack multiplicatively with each other. Order matters: passives are free once you know what to breed for, potential is cheap and capped, and condensing is the expensive one you save for the Pal you have already decided to keep. Work down this list and a mid-tier 110 line comfortably out-tanks an untouched 140.

Level It Up

Every level adds base × 0.075 Defense, so the higher the species base, the more each level is worth — Panthalus gains 15 per level while Fuddler gains 3.75. That gap is why levelling a tank feels like it does something and levelling a Chikipi does not. It is also the only lever that costs nothing but time, so get a Pal you intend to keep into the party and let it soak experience before you spend a single Pal Soul on it. The full curve and the experience needed per level is in the stat priority guide.

Roll the Right Passives

Passives are the biggest percentage swing available and they cost nothing but breeding attempts. Four slots of the right ones is +50% or better, applied on top of everything else. Diamond Body is the one to chase — +30% Defense plus flinch and knockback immunity, which quietly matters more than the number in an alpha fight where you keep getting staggered out of position. Watch for the negatives too: Brittle at -20% and Sadist at -15% will undo a whole tier of species advantage.

The rank 4 and 5 passives are far more reliable to breed toward than to hope for in the wild, since offspring pull from both parents — find one carrier and breed it forward. The rank 4 and 5 passive list covers which Pals carry them natively, and the full passive database has every effect and holder.

Feed It Stout Fruit

Every Pal has a hidden 0-100 Defense potential that multiplies its level growth by up to 1.3. Ability Glasses show you the roll, and each Stout Fruit adds +10 to it — so a Pal that rolled 60 is five fruits away from perfect. They cost 25 Bounty Tokens, 100 Battle Tickets or 200 Dog Coins each, which makes this the cheapest large gain on the page. Topping a Panthalus from a zero roll to 100 is worth 270 Defense at level 60, six times the gap between third place and tenth on the table above.

Condense and Feed It Souls

The Pal Essence Condenser eats duplicates to push a Pal up four ranks, and the Statue of Power spends Pal Souls on a separate 20-rank ladder that raises Attack, Defense and HP together. Between them that is 52 Pal Souls and a lot of duplicate catching, which is why this is the last lever you pull and only on a Pal you are certain about. The full order, every soul cost and which alphas drop souls fastest is in the Pal min-max guide.

Keep It Fed

A hungry Pal fights at a 20% Defense penalty, and one that has dropped all the way to starving loses half its Defense outright — enough to turn a 140 tank into something softer than an untouched 70. Big Pals burn through it fast: Panthalus, Paladius and Blazamut Ryu all carry a 600-point hunger meter and eat food grade 9, so they need real cooked meals rather than berries. Keep a stack of good food in the party's inventory before a boss run and the whole page above stays true; forget it and none of it does.

TipDefense multiplies how long the health bar lasts rather than shaving a flat amount off each hit, so it is worth the most on Pals that already have HP behind it. Frostallion Noct at 135 Defense and 140 HP survives noticeably longer than Mimog at 130 Defense and 60 HP, even though the Defense numbers look almost identical. Read the two stats together, never one alone.

The Short Version

Panthalus has the highest usable Defense in the game at a base 200, Paladius is the best of the legendaries at 145, and Tetroise is the highest one you can walk out and catch in numbers today. Below 70 base Defense, nothing survives a serious fight regardless of what you do to it. For everything in between, a perfect potential roll plus Diamond Body and Legend is worth roughly two full tiers of species — so the Pal you like with a good roll beats the Pal on paper without one.
