Best Pals for Watering: Ranks, Spawns, and Water Wheels
Watering ranked for all 46 Pals that have it — Shaolong's lone rank 8, the five Pals that clear the Ancient Farm's Watering 6 gate, exact spawn counts and food costs, all 11 structures that need a waterer, and the Water Fountain and passives that speed the job up.

Watering is the job that keeps crops alive and spins the water turbines on your Crusher and Mill, and 46 of the game's 288 Pals can do it. This guide ranks every one of them, lists the food costs and spawn counts that decide who deserves a base slot, names the five Pals that clear the Ancient Farm's Watering 6 gate, and covers the Water Fountain, the handbook and the passive stack that make the whole base run faster.
Watering at a Glance
Watering is the widest of the three farm jobs — 46 Pals have it against Planting's 45 — and for almost everything you build, rank barely matters. Ten of the eleven structures that use Watering only ask for rank 1, so a Teafant legally waters a Wheat Plantation exactly like a Shaolong does; the rank buys speed, not access. The eleventh is the Ancient Farm, which demands Watering 6 alongside Planting 6 and Gathering 6, and that single requirement is the only reason the top of this list exists. The other thing worth knowing early: Watering isn't only a farm job. The Crusher and the Mill both run off a water wheel, so a base with no waterer can't make Flour either.

Best Watering Pals in Palworld
These 15 are every Pal at Watering 4 or better. Read the last column before the rank column, because the two rank 7s are both effectively locked behind a single boss pin — Jormuntide and Neptilius have no ordinary spawn points anywhere on the map. That makes Shaolong the outlier that matters: it holds the only Watering 8 in the game and appears at 63 spawn points, so the best waterer is also one you can go and catch. If you're not there yet, Faleris Aqua is the widest-spread rank 6 at 197 points, and Ghangler Ignis gives you rank 5 on 405 points while doubling as a Kindling 5 body for your furnace.
| Pal | Watering | Other jobs it does | Food | Night shift | How to get it |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Shaolong | 8 | Gathering 5 | 9 | No | 63 spawn points — Shaolong spawn map. The only pair that hatches one is Shaolong × Shaolong |
Jormuntide | 7 | — | 8 | No | No ordinary spawns — a Lv. 55 alpha, or breed it from a long list of pairs — Jormuntide alpha location |
Neptilius | 7 | — | 9 | No | No ordinary spawns — a Lv. 60 alpha, and it only breeds from a Neptilius pair — Neptilius alpha location |
Faleris Aqua | 6 | Transporting 5 | 9 | No | 197 spawn points plus a Lv. 66 alpha — Faleris Aqua spawn map |
Suzaku Aqua | 6 | — | 7 | No | 50 spawn points — Suzaku Aqua spawn map |
Ghangler Ignis | 5 | Kindling 5 · Transporting 2 | 7 | No | 405 spawn points — Ghangler Ignis spawn map |
Ghangler | 5 | Transporting 2 | 7 | Yes | 316 spawn points — Ghangler spawn map |
Whalaska | 5 | Cooling 6 | 8 | No | 187 spawn points plus a Lv. 55 alpha — Whalaska spawn map |
Ophydia | 5 | Planting 7 | 9 | No | No ordinary spawns — a single Lv. 69 alpha, or breed it — Ophydia alpha location |
Broncherry Aqua | 5 | — | 6 | No | Just 7 spawn points, the thinnest on this table — Broncherry Aqua spawn map |
Solmora Lux | 4 | Generating Electricity 6 | 6 | No | 251 spawn points — Solmora Lux spawn map |
Azurobe | 4 | — | 5 | No | 199 spawn points plus a Lv. 40 alpha — Azurobe spawn map |
Skutlass | 4 | Lumbering 4 · Gathering 1 | 5 | No | 129 spawn points — Skutlass spawn map |
Solmora | 4 | — | 6 | No | 109 spawn points — Solmora spawn map |
Elphidran Aqua | 4 | Lumbering 3 | 3 | No | 55 spawn points — Elphidran Aqua spawn map |
Shaolong Is Rank 8 and Actually Catchable
Shaolong is the only Watering 8 in the game, and unlike the top pick in most other jobs it doesn't come with an availability catch — 63 spawn points is thin but real, and you can farm as many as you want. It also carries Gathering 5, which is one short of the Ancient Farm's third gate, so a single handbook read on the Gathering side turns one Shaolong into two thirds of an endgame farm. Budget 9 food per feeding and give it room, because it's an XL body and cramped plots are the usual reason a big worker stands around idle. If you want it as a fighter as well as a farmhand, the hard mode Auri and Shaolong guide covers that fight.
Jormuntide and Neptilius Are Alpha-Only
Both rank 7 waterers sit at zero ordinary spawn points, which is a much bigger deal than the one-rank gap to Shaolong suggests. Jormuntide exists on the map as a single Lv. 55 alpha, but it has a wide breeding pool — pairs like Braloha × Neptilius and Anubis × Whalaska all land on it — so the breeding calculator is the sane route in. Neptilius is the harder one: a Lv. 60 alpha, and the only pair that produces it is Neptilius × Neptilius, so the farm duplicates it rather than creating it. The upside of Neptilius is focus — it has no other work suitability at all, so it will never wander off to a workbench mid-crop, and it doubles as a base defender once it's home.
Faleris Aqua and Ghangler Ignis Are the Volume Picks
If you want a real waterer tonight rather than a breeding project, these two are the answer. Faleris Aqua clears the Ancient Farm gate at Watering 6 and turns up on 197 spawn points plus a Lv. 66 alpha, and its Transporting 5 means it hauls the harvest to the chest instead of leaving it on the ground. Ghangler Ignis is the wider net at 405 points — the most presence of any Pal above Watering 3 — and its Kindling 5 covers your furnace on the same body, which matters a lot in a small base with limited worker slots. Its plain version, Ghangler, is the same rank 5 on 316 points and runs nocturnal, so pair the two if you want plots watered around the clock.
Elphidran Aqua Is the Cheapest Real Waterer
Work rank isn't the only currency — food is, and Elphidran Aqua wins that column among Pals that actually water fast. It does Watering 4 on an appetite of 3, which is 1.33 ranks per food when every rank 5 and above sits below 0.9. Three of them eat less than two Neptilius and keep more plots wet. Further down the ladder, Fuack Ignis manages Watering 2 and Kindling 2 on an appetite of 1, the cheapest body in the job, and it's an XS Pal that fits into any layout. This is the setup to run before your base level supports big eaters.
The Ancient Farm's Watering 6 Gate
The Ancient Farm at Tech Lv. 78 is the only Watering structure with a real requirement, and it's a triple one: Watering 6, Planting 6 and Gathering 6. Exactly five Pals clear the Watering half, and the table below is all of them. Look at the other two columns and the problem is obvious — not one of the five brings a rank 6 in Planting or Gathering, so the farm always needs at least two bodies. Shaolong is the closest thing to a solo answer, since its Gathering 5 is one handbook read from 6. Pair a handbooked Shaolong with a Lyleen for the Planting side and the whole gate is solved with two Pals.
| Pal | Watering | Planting | Gathering | How close to clearing the farm alone |
|---|---|---|---|---|
Shaolong | 8 | — | 5 | Closest in the game — one Gathering handbook covers two of the three gates |
Jormuntide | 7 | — | — | Watering only — needs a planter and a harvester beside it |
Neptilius | 7 | — | — | Watering only, and no other job at all to distract it |
Faleris Aqua | 6 | — | — | Clears the gate exactly, and hauls the harvest with Transporting 5 |
Suzaku Aqua | 6 | — | — | Clears the gate on the smallest appetite of the five, at 7 food |
The handbook is the cheap way around all of this. Applied Watering Handbook I permanently adds +1 Watering to whichever Pal reads it, and it costs 300 Dog Coins at the Medal Shop. Feed one to a rank 5 and Ghangler Ignis, Ghangler, Whalaska, Broncherry Aqua and Ophydia all become Ancient Farm legal — five extra options for 300 coins, which beats hunting an alpha. Ophydia is the standout there, because at Planting 7 it already clears the planting gate, so one handbook makes it cover two. Star ranks from the Pal Essence Condenser lift work suitability on top of the base value as well; the handbook and condenser rank-up guide covers both systems and the full set of twelve books.
Every Structure That Needs Watering
Eleven structures use Watering, and only the Ancient Farm asks for more than rank 1. Two of them aren't farms at all: the
Crusher at Tech Lv. 8 and the
Mill at Tech Lv. 15 both need a Pal to spin a water turbine, which is why bread production quietly stops the moment your only waterer gets reassigned. Despite the name, the Cryogenic Crusher is not on this list — it runs on Cooling and a power supply instead, so don't staff it with a waterer. The genuinely unusual entry is the
Skillfruit Orchard at Tech Lv. 71: it's the only farm in the game that needs a waterer and no planter or harvester at all, so one Pal keeps the whole thing running.
| Structure | Tech Lv. | Watering | What it does | Build cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 1 | Grows | 3 Berry Seeds · 10 Wood · 10 Stone | |
| 8 | 1 | Water wheel that breaks Stone and Wood into other materials | 50 Wood · 20 Stone · 10 Paldium Fragment | |
| 15 | 1 | Grows | 3 Wheat Seeds · 15 Wood · 15 Stone | |
| 15 | 1 | Water wheel that mills Wheat into | 10 Wooden Board · 40 Stone · 10 Ingot | |
| 21 | 1 | Grows | 3 Tomato Seeds · 70 Wood · 50 Stone · 5 Aquatic Pal Fluids | |
| 25 | 1 | Grows | 3 Lettuce Seeds · 100 Wood · 70 Stone · 10 Aquatic Pal Fluids | |
| 29 | 1 | Grows | 3 Potato Seeds · 30 Wood · 20 Stone · 3 Aquatic Pal Fluids | |
| 32 | 1 | Grows | 3 Carrot Seeds · 30 Wood · 20 Stone · 1 Aquatic Pal Fluids | |
| 36 | 1 | Grows | 3 Onion Seeds · 30 Wood · 20 Stone · 2 Aquatic Pal Fluids | |
| 71 | 1 | Watering only — no planter or harvester needed | 200 Mythical Wood · 500 Paldium Fragment · 150 Soralite | |
| 78 | 6 | Grows any crop indoors, in a smaller footprint | 50 Paloxite Ingot · 50 World Tree Holy Water · 100 Mythical Wood · 10 Ancient Civilization Core |
Growth time is only half of what a waterer actually has to do. A crop's total work — the combined planting, watering and harvesting effort a cycle demands — climbs far faster than the timer: red berries finish in 3 minutes for 13,500 work, while onions take 6.5 minutes and 63,000. That's roughly 4.7× the labour for 2.2× the wait, so a wall of onion plots keeps your waterer pinned much longer than the clock suggests, and it's the usual reason a base that ran fine on berries suddenly can't keep up. The full crop table lives on the Palworld crop growth times page.
Speed Watering Up: Fountain, Handbook and Passives
Since every Pal in the game starts at 100 base Work Speed, the only levers you have are the Water Fountain, the handbook and the four passive slots. The
Water Fountain unlocks at Tech Lv. 23 for 20 Ingot, 50 Stone and 8 Aquatic Pal Fluids, and it raises watering speed across the whole base just by existing — no Pal staffs it, and it speeds up the Crusher and Mill as well as your plots. Build exactly one: the game states outright that a second Fountain does nothing, and people waste materials on rows of them constantly. Passives are the bigger multiplier. The four best Work Speed traits stack to +240%, and unlike the Fountain they follow the Pal, so roll them onto whoever you plan to keep.
| Passive | Work Speed | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Demon's Hand | +90% | The biggest in the game, but SAN drains 15% faster — pair it with a hot spring |
| Remarkable Craftsmanship | +75% | Pure upside, no drawback |
| Artisan | +50% | The common one you'll actually roll |
| Work Slave | +30% | A rank 1 trait carrying a rank 4 number — take it whenever it rolls |
| Speedy Worker Lv. 4 | +25% | Top tier of the four-step Speedy Worker line |
| Serious | +20% | Fine filler on an early waterer |
| Hermit Sage | −20% | Halves SAN loss but costs you speed — a trade, not a buff |
| Clumsy | −10% | Reroll it |
| Slacker | −30% | Reroll it — the worst work trait in the game |
Every Other Watering Pal
Nineteen Pals sit at Watering 2 or 3, and this is where most players actually staff their first plots — common, cheap and catchable in bulk. Turtacle has the widest presence of any waterer in the game at 1,456 spawn points, Fuack Ignis is the appetite champion at 1 food, and Penking is the odd one out: only Watering 2, but Mining 3, Transporting 3, Handiwork 2 and Cooling 2 alongside it, so it earns a slot by covering five jobs badly rather than one well. Dumud Gild is the other multi-role pick, adding Farming 4 for the ranch.
| Pal | Watering | Food | Spawn points | Night shift | Also does |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Surfent | 3 | 3 | 301 | No | Farming 2 |
Polapup | 3 | 4 | 242 | No | Cooling 4 |
Relaxaurus | 3 | 7 | 38 | No | Transporting 3 |
Turtacle | 2 | 3 | 1,456 | No | Mining 1 · Transporting 1 |
Jellroy | 2 | 3 | 1,193 | Yes | Handiwork 1 · Medicine Production 1 · Transporting 1 |
Jelliette | 2 | 3 | 868 | No | Handiwork 1 · Transporting 1 |
Turtacle Terra | 2 | 3 | 773 | No | Mining 3 · Transporting 1 |
Gloopie | 2 | 3 | 743 | Yes | Handiwork 2 · Transporting 2 |
Finsider | 2 | 2 | 671 | No | Transporting 1 |
Finsider Ignis | 2 | 2 | 414 | No | Kindling 2 · Transporting 1 |
Dumud | 2 | 3 | 368 | No | Mining 2 · Transporting 1 · Farming 1 |
Penking | 2 | 4 | 313 | No | Mining 3 · Transporting 3 · Handiwork 2 · Cooling 2 |
Dumud Gild | 2 | 3 | 312 | No | Farming 4 · Mining 2 · Transporting 1 |
Penking Lux | 2 | 4 | 252 | No | Generating Electricity 3 · Mining 3 · Transporting 3 · Handiwork 2 |
Munchill | 2 | 3 | 228 | No | Cooling 3 · Transporting 1 |
Gloopie Primo | 2 | 3 | 213 | No | Handiwork 2 · Transporting 2 |
Fuack Ignis | 2 | 1 | 120 | No | Kindling 2 · Handiwork 1 · Transporting 1 |
Gobfin | 2 | 2 | 66 | No | Handiwork 2 · Transporting 1 |
Skutlass Ignis | 2 | 5 | 34 | No | Kindling 3 · Lumbering 3 · Gathering 2 |
Below that, twelve Pals hold Watering 1 — Kelpsea, Pengullet, Celaray, Croajiro, Pengullet Lux, Croajiro Noct, Fuack, Killamari Primo, Killamari, Celaray Lux, Teafant and Amione. None of them deserves a dedicated slot once you can catch a rank 3, but every one of them legally staffs a plantation, a Mill or a Crusher on hour one, and Kelpsea alone covers 1,359 spawn points on 1 food. The full Watering suitability list and the work optimizer let you filter the whole roster by the jobs your base is short on.
The Short Answer
Catch a Shaolong and put it on your farm — it's the only Watering 8 in the game, it spawns at 63 points instead of hiding behind an alpha pin, and a single Gathering handbook takes it to two of the Ancient Farm's three gates. If you're not there yet, Faleris Aqua clears the same Watering 6 gate off 197 spawn points, and Ghangler Ignis covers watering and kindling on one body at 405 points. Before any of that, remember ten of the eleven Watering structures accept rank 1, so a wall of Turtacle or Kelpsea runs your early plots for almost no food. Build one
Water Fountain at Tech Lv. 23, buy the 300 Dog Coin Applied Watering Handbook I when a rank 5 is one short of the farm gate, and roll toward the +240% Work Speed passive stack on whoever you keep.
