How to Get the Item Retrieval Machine and How to Use It

Everything the Item Retrieval Machine costs in Palworld: technology level 49 and 5 points, all three materials, the 408 Ore and 230 Paldium Fragment raw bill, what it actually does with your chests, and how it stacks up against the Guild Chest.

The Item Retrieval Machine is the base build that puts the contents of every chest at your base behind one panel, so you stop opening eight containers hunting for a stack of Refined Ingot. This guide covers the technology level it unlocks at, all three materials and the raw ore they really cost, how the machine behaves once it is down, and whether it beats the storage you already own.

Item Retrieval Machine at a Glance

It arrived with the Feybreak update and sits in the Storage tab of the build menu, which is the one place people forget to look because everything else in that tab is a box. It is also the priciest thing in the tab by a distance: the 30 Storage builds in the game average a few thousand gold in materials, and this one runs about 136,020 gold worth — more than even the Advanced Chest. The upside is that it asks nothing of you afterwards. No electricity, no Pal assigned to it, no work suitability at all, so once it is built it just sits there working.

How to Unlock the Item Retrieval Machine

Hit character level 49, open the Palworld technology tree, and spend 5 technology points. That is the joint-most expensive row at this level, and it is a real choice: 396 of the game's 588 technologies are already on the board by level 49, and clearing every one of them costs 869 points, so nothing here is free. The Large-Scale Stone Oven is the other 5-point entry at the same level, and the Grappling Gun 4 above it is a boss technology that spends Ancient Technology Points instead, so it never competes for the same pool. If your base is already a wall of chests, take the machine first — the decoration sets at 1 point each will still be there next level.

Crafting Materials and Where They Come From

Three materials, and the 100 Pal Metal Ingot are 92% of the cost on their own. The 30 Paldium Fragment are pocket change you probably already have, and the 4 Bio Battery are only four units — but they are the gate, because Bio Batteries are made on a Production Assembly Line II (technology level 42, 400 power) and need three sub-materials each. Start the ingots smelting, then go make the batteries while the furnace works.

MaterialQtyMade atRecipe per unitValue each
Pal Metal Ingot100Furnace4 Ore + 1 Pure Quartz + 2 Paldium Fragment1,250
Paldium Fragment30Mined from Paldium Ore nodesNo recipe — mine it, or buy it from a Wandering Merchant70
Bio Battery4Production Assembly Line II1 Electric Organ + 1 Refined Ingot + 1 Carbon Fiber2,230

Pal Metal Ingot ×100

Every ingot is 4 Ore, 1 Pure Quartz and 2 Paldium Fragment, so 100 of them means 400 Ore, 100 Pure Quartz and 200 Paldium Fragment before you touch the other two materials. None of that is rare — there are 1,632 ore nodes and 607 Pure Quartz nodes scattered across Palpagos, and you can see every ore node on the interactive map. What matters is the furnace: by level 49 you should already have the Electric Furnace from technology level 44, and running 100 ingots through a primitive one is the slowest possible way to build this thing. Park a mining crew at a base sitting on ore and let the stack build itself while you gather the rest.

Paldium Fragment ×30

The 30 fragments listed in the recipe are the small half of your Paldium problem — the ingots quietly eat another 200, so the real number is 230. There are 711 Paldium Ore nodes on the map, and you can pull up all of them with the Paldium layer if your usual spots are picked clean. Lunaris also drops 2-3 fragments every time you take one down, and the Wandering Merchants sell them outright at 70 gold each, which makes topping up a 230-fragment shortfall a 16,100 gold problem rather than an afternoon of mining.

Bio Battery ×4

Each Bio Battery is 1 Electric Organ, 1 Refined Ingot and 1 Carbon Fiber, so four of them come to 4 Electric Organs, 4 Refined Ingots and 4 Carbon Fiber — and the Carbon Fiber chains down again into 5 Charcoal plus 1 Fire Organ apiece on a Production Assembly Line. Electric Organs come off 23 different Pals, and the table below is the short list worth a trip. If you would rather not hunt at all, six merchant stocks carry Electric Organ at 300 gold, so all four batteries' worth of organs is 1,200 gold and a walk to a merchant pin — there are 12 of them on the map.

PalElectric Organs per killWhy bother
Prixter Lux4-5The single best drop in the game — one kill covers a Bio Battery and change
Grizzbolt2-4Big, slow and easy to find; two of them finish the whole build
Relaxaurus Lux2-3Drops consistently and is worth catching for its base work anyway
Azurmane2-3Fast to farm if you already ride one
Penking Lux1-3Coastal and predictable, good if you are early into Electric farming
Sparkit1-2The lazy answer — stick one on a Ranch and it makes Electric Organs for you

What One Machine Really Costs

Flatten every recipe down to things you dig up, chop or skin and the machine is far less scary than the 100-ingot line suggests. Ore is the bulk at 408, Paldium is the one that actually runs out at 230, and everything else is a rounding error you will clear in one trip. The only genuinely awkward entries are the 4 Fire Organs and 4 Electric Organs, because those need a Pal killed rather than a node mined — and both are on sale at merchants if you cannot be bothered.

How to Use the Item Retrieval Machine

Place it inside the base circle, interact with it, and you get the contents of every chest at that base in one list instead of walking the row and opening each one. It is a reading device, not a teleporter: the chests keep holding your stuff, the machine just spares you the search. That also means its usefulness scales with how messy you are — a base with two Metal Chests gains almost nothing, while a base with fifteen containers of ore, ingots, schematics and food becomes usable again.

A few things worth knowing before you commit 5 technology points to it:

  • It covers one base. Build a second machine at your mining base if you want the same convenience there.
  • Nothing gets assigned to it and nothing powers it, so it will not compete with your generators or your worker Pals.
  • The build workload is only 300, so a couple of Handiwork Pals finish it in moments — the wait is all in the 100 ingots, not the assembly.
  • It stacks with, rather than replaces, the Guild Chest: one solves finding things at home, the other solves moving things between bases.
TipBuild the 4 Bio Batteries before you start hoarding ingots. They need a Production Assembly Line II at technology level 42 with 400 power behind it, and if you skipped that node the machine is blocked no matter how much Pal Metal Ingot you stockpile.

Item Retrieval Machine vs the Other Endgame Storage

These three get confused constantly because they all show up in the same tab within ten technology levels of each other, and they solve completely different problems. The Guild Chest is the cheapest of the three and the only one that moves items between bases — its contents are shared everywhere you place one. The Advanced Chest is pure capacity at the top of the tree. The Item Retrieval Machine holds nothing at all; it is a search bar for the boxes you already own. If you are only building one and you run a single main base, the machine is the quality-of-life pick; if you shuttle materials between three bases, build the Guild Chest first.

Storage Worth Building Around It

The machine is only as good as the boxes it reads, and most players are still running rows of Wooden Chests at level 49 because upgrading never felt urgent. It does now: fewer, bigger containers mean fewer entries in the retrieval list. The Refined Metal Chest at technology level 39 is the value pick at roughly 5,200 gold of materials, and the two food vaults are worth a mention because chests do not stop food spoiling — the Cooler Box and Refrigerator both take an Ice Pal to slow rot, and they hand their contents to the machine like any other container.

Is It Worth It?

Yes, if you have one base you actually live in. It costs 5 technology points, roughly 408 Ore and 230 Paldium Fragment in raw terms, and it gives back every minute you have ever spent opening chests in sequence looking for Circuit Boards. It is the most expensive Storage build in the game and it stores nothing, which sounds absurd until you have used it for an hour. If you are still hopping between temporary camps, spend the level 49 points elsewhere and come back when your main base has more than ten containers in it.
